  19. Resolved Question: What ever happened to law and order?
  20. 3 Feb 2008 at 9:36am
IMMIGRATION IN THE 20TH AND 21ST CENTURY - THE CURSE OF CIVILIZED NATIONS AND DECENT PEOPLES. Immigration to America in the 17th to 19th century was by decent, hardworking, well intentioned people, heading to America with honorable intentions to build and contribute to society. They created a workable social system with benefits to the deserving and a society of well-intentioned and decent people. But no such people come any more. Now they come in droves, packing the major cities, causing an increase in crime, congestion, and taxes as real estate rents soar, parking is unavailable or exorbitantly high. Americans who took their entire lives to pay off their home mortgages, now find that the taxes on their homes are so high, they cant afford to live in them any more and the congestion so bad, they cant even find a place to park in front of their own homes. Many have to pack up and move out of the city, just to make ends meet, and then face the arduous daily hours of driving back and forth just to get to work and back home. That is, those that still have jobs, since as this goes on, jobs disappear, either right here where we get laid off, or the whole company moves out to a cheap labor country. And as the hordes make demands for energy needs, power needed to heat and light homes and buildings is insufficient, and cities black out, the demand for gas soars, heating prices skyrocket, and our own supply of gas becomes insufficient to meet our own needs, and we become victims of the arabs, who use the pumps to revenge our policies they don?t like. They pile over the borders or by plane on visitor visas, preying on the good naturedness of Americans to provide a refuge for the oppressed, they connive the appearance of the downtrodden and persecuted, and then sit down comfortably and stay here, leeching off the health care system which faces bankruptcy in 20 years, the welfare system that us sucker u.s. taxpayers have to pick up the tab for, and which we spent decades to build. Social parasites from latin america, flock here to live free on us sucker taxpayers, dragging their families and relatives in, once they get green cards and then swamping the health care system with their third world illnesses and birth defects. And the other breed of latinos ? criminals of the most evil intensities terrorizing communities in which they rob and kill. Thieves and common criminals from the countries of eastern Europe and the soviet union, hearing that there is still stuff on store shelves when stores close, that hasn?t been shoplifted or sold, come and steal, with impunity. Mafia organizations that control Russia and the countries of the former soviet union, setting up foreign crime systems that specialize in grand larceny, weaponry, even nuclear arms materials for sale, stolen from the old soviet system, available for sale to our enemies, raking them million$. Africans with strange ,deadly diseases walk in, causing epidemics and death to our gay citizens and to innocent people in general and swamping the health care system. Asians with alien religious philosophies, contrary to Christian monotheism, poisoning the minds of our youth. And they come and take our jobs away here in America, while employers, enticed by cheap labor, move their companies there, leaving us unemployed,. Terrorists walk in and go about their death tactics with ease and we shudder at what they will do to us next. All, contributing to crime, violence, social unrest. Finally, To add insult to these injuries to our nation, our government picks up the tab for hundreds of thousands of third world ?students? to come, pack our universities tuition free at the expense of us US taxpayers ,while we Americans fall into debt to pay for our own children to get a college education. AND WE ARE EXPECTED TO PICK UP THE TAB WORLDWIDE FOR THEM, WHENEVER S--T HAPPENS ANYWHERE. What kind of fools are running this country? What kind of fools are we to let this go on? And WHATEVER HAPPENED TO LAW AND ORDER?

  33. Resolved Question: Is Christianity only a religion of Peace and Love?
  34. 25 Jan 2008 at 7:56pm
I do not think that anyone can honestly and objectively examine these situations in American society and answer "yes" to that question. Christianity can encourage Peace and Love - but it certainly need not, and it quite often has done just the opposite. Although the people responsible for violence might have found a way to express their hatred without Christianity, it cannot be ignored that Christianity offers a convenient divine mandate for hatred and violent acts against a wide range of people in our diverse country. Christians are going to have to seriously rethink and revamp their faith if they are going to join in building a prosperous, pluralistic America of the future. Bible Wars One sad bit of American and Christian history which few (if any) manage to learn about are the "Bible Wars" between Catholics and Protestants in the latter half of the 19th century. This is especially unfortunate because is remarkably resembles some of the issues which face us today with regards to having religion in public school. If it could lead to violence and death then, we should be wary today. Christianity & Homosexuality The first thing to look at is the nature of the rhetoric and propaganda which is disseminated by "good Christians" in America when addressing this and similar issues. Senator Trent Lott has openly compared homosexuals with thieves, expressing the fundamental assumption that homosexuality is essentially criminal in nature and deserving of similar treatment. Christianity & Abortion Government officials in both Canada and the United States have issued warnings to abortion doctors to take extra precautions. Anti-abortion extremists in Britain have warned the public that there "will be casualties" in the coming war, and that they did not intend to "turn the other cheek." As the anti-abortion rhetoric has increased over the years, so has the anti-abortion violence - property is destroyed, people are killed, and women are denied access to medical care.

  61. Resolved Question: How should we best celebrate a hole in the ground?
  62. 11 Jan 2008 at 8:28am
On January 11, 1908, U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt declares the massive Grand Canyon in northwestern Arizona a national monument. Though Native Americans lived in the area as early as the 13th century, the first European sighting of the canyon wasn't until 1540, by members of an expedition headed by the Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado. Because of its remote and inaccessible location, several centuries passed before North American settlers really explored the canyon. In 1869, geologist John Wesley Powell led a group of 10 men in the first difficult journey down the rapids of the Colorado River and along the length of the 277-mile gorge in four rowboats. By the end of the 19th century, the Grand Canyon was attracting thousands of tourists each year. One famous visitor was President Theodore Roosevelt, a New Yorker with a particular affection for the American West. After becoming president in 1901 after the assassination of President William McKinley, Roosevelt made environmental conservation a major part of his presidency. After establishing the National Wildlife Refuge to protect the country's animals, fish and birds, Roosevelt turned his attention to federal regulation of public lands. Though a region could be given national park status--indicating that all private development on that land was illegal--only by an act of Congress, Roosevelt cut down on red tape by beginning a new presidential practice of granting a similar "national monument" designation to some of the West's greatest treasures. In January 1908, Roosevelt exercised this right to make more than 800,000 acres of the Grand Canyon area into a national monument. "Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is," he declared. "You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is keep it for your children, your children?s children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see." Congress did not officially outlaw private development in the Grand Canyon until 1919, when President Woodrow Wilson signed the Grand Canyon National Park Act. Today, more than 5 million people visit the canyon each year. The canyon floor is accessible by foot, mule or boat, and whitewater rafting, hiking and running in the area are especially popular. Many choose to conserve their energies and simply take in the breathtaking view from the canyon's South Rim--some 7,000 feet above sea level--and marvel at a vista virtually unchanged for over 400 years.

How was the frontier closed in the United States? At the end of the 19th Century the migration of people from the east to the west caused considerable change and conflict. Native Americans lost long held land to United States as it carved out the western territories into states for settlement. The closing of the frontier would lead to ever increasing diversity and conflict. From the time that Europeans came to North America until the present, their interactions with the American Indian peoples have been detrimental to the geographical land holdings of Indians. The project for this section is to select an American Indian nation and track their territory in three different maps. The maps should be a series of the same geographic region (United States, portion of the U.S., etc.). It should show the following time eras:Revolutionary era (1770s), turn of the century (1900s) era, and modern day era. The maps should be followed by a brief history of the nation that you have selected.

  71. Resolved Question: When will American workers wake up?
  72. 7 Jan 2008 at 4:06pm
Corporate Executives have become like the Robber Barons of the 19th Century. $400 million bonuses, $30 million homes, $100 million yachts. All on the backs of the working people. They don't pay their employees livable wages. Many can't even get a full work week. The high cost of gas and food is making things tougher. They do nothing. They export jobs to other countries so they can exploit foreign workers. They import illegal workers to run down our wages. They have our politicians bought and paid for. Where are the politicians who fight for workers. When will American workers share in the wealth produced by their hard labor. The companies owe more to their workers. We need to start a workers party.

  75. Resolved Question: Help with Portrait of a Lady by Henry James?
  76. 5 Jan 2008 at 11:49am
I've been reading Portrait, annotating, Sparknoting, and I honestly just don't understand this book. I just can't get past the style of writing, which to me just seems like 19th century flourish-y fluff. I'm 130 pages in, and so far it just seems that it has no plot. I have to create a thesis statement about the book, and I wanted to know if I could get some help. So far, I have that James describes the conflicting values of individualism and social convention through.......and that's it. I was thinking something about the really obvious conflict of American and European culture (definitely shown through Caspar and Warburton). Can anyone who has read the book help me/lead me on the right track with writing a thesis statement about it?

  84. 28 Dec 2007 at 6:23am
European Rabbits were introduced in Australia in the 19th Century, but now are quite a pest... Australians can hunt and eat them as they are the best rabbit on earth to eat, far superior to the American Cottontail which our Indians also hunted.

  91. Resolved Question: Could this happen, or has it happened, with US immigration...
  92. 20 Dec 2007 at 12:27pm
I just read about William Tweed's activities during the Tammany Hall days in the late 19th/early 20th centuries. Here's a quote: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tammany_Hall "Under Tweed, special naturalization committees were established to complete the forms, pay the fees and obtain the witnesses necessary for naturalizing immigrants, and judges were compelled to expedite naturalization proceedings." Or were the laws during this period in American history more immigrant-friendly or just more absent than they are today?

  93. Resolved Question: If we have a First World & a Third World whats the 2nd Wor...
  94. 19 Dec 2007 at 11:27pm
So the First World are those Rich developed countries ie, USA, UK, Australia etc...The Third World is seen in undeveloped African and Asian Countries. Is the 2nd World best defined as "developing, but not yet developed" or "underdeveloped", like the South American countries etc... Also as in Third World countries where female babies were left to float down the river as in 19th Century China, are women valued the same in the undeveloped third world and underdeveloped 2nd world, (Shouldn't this be a lesson to the developed First World?).

So far I have thought about... What were common practices of early anatomists and how did it impact the world of medicine? Disease was a major factor in American colonization, what were common diseases of the day and how did it affect the realm of medicine during the time period? Why did early anatomists resort to body snatching? What was the philosophical standings of these early people? Did the church prevent medicine from progressing? What was the impact of their findings on medicine? Any other ideas would be helpful :) Please keep it within the realm of medicine of 17th-early 19th century.
