  9. Resolved Question: karo syrup?
  10. 22 May 2008 at 11:30am
Has anyone used Karo syrup for their baby? We took our daughter to the ER last night, after she had screamed all day... they took an x-ray, and she's completely full of crap (but not constipated.... she's not having trouble going, she just isn't going....) so they gave her a suppository to get her to start, and the doctor told me to get a thing of karo syrup, and to put 1 ounce of that with each 4 ounce bottle, or 24 hours, and that should get her emptied out and get her started again (I know she isn't constipated because she has pooped some, and it's normal/runny). So my question is has anyone here ever done this, and what should I expect? We're buying the syrup tonight when my fiance gets home from work. it should say FOR 24 hours, not OR 24 hours. Sorry.

  21. Resolved Question: What are the chances of birth defects after having X-rays?
  22. 20 May 2008 at 3:00am
A friend of mine recently found out she was 7 weeks pregnant. Before she found out, she had 3 abdominal x-rays done. I'm not sure why her doctor didn't check to see if she was preggo with a blood or urine test first, but now she is really worried that something is going to be wrong with the baby. Any advice?

  29. Resolved Question: powerhouses battle now no backing down from the other?
  30. 19 May 2008 at 6:21am
the detroit pistons and boston celtics will clash in the eastern conference finals.i know theres those who say the celtics hadnt won on the road, but theyre unbeatable at home and do have homecourt advantage over the pistons.the pistons will have a much tougher time versus boston than philadelphia and orlando.like the pistons the celtics are a good free throw shooting team where the celtics will matchup good there.you cant hack a ray allen, paul pierce, kevin garnett and most other celtics theyre not going to miss many foul shots unlike the magic.neither wallace or garnett is going to back down from the other, nor is maxiell vs perkins, big baby or leon powe vs mcdyees, perhaps they should put at times allen on billups than rondo because if allen gets hot he can hold his own with billups in 3s and free throws, paul pierce can hold his own with hamilton.if they bring in hunter the celtics have rondo, house or cassell to match him. they have posey, brown and other guys for prince.who will win?

  31. Resolved Question: Miley Ray or Destiny Hope?
  32. 18 May 2008 at 10:50pm
My sister and I are debating whether or not Miley Cyrus should have stuck with her birth name, or she did the right thing by having it legally changed. We're not sure which name we like better. Opinions? A little background info for those who may want to know: Miley Cyrus's birth name was Destiny Hope Cyrus (According to her parents, she was named that because "it was her Destiny to bring Hope"). She smiled a lot as a baby, so her father gave her the nickname Smiley, which was then shortened to Miley, and is what she ended up using as her stage name. She recently decided to have her name legally changed from Destiny Hope to Miley Ray, because nobody called her Destiny Hope anyway and she wanted the name Miley to be on her learner's permit. The "Ray" part is something she added as a tribute to her father, Billy Ray, and her late grandfather whom she was very close to and whose middle name was also Ray.

    1. Jamie has the flu. She is uncomfortable and reaches out for flu medication, which is supposed to make her more comfortable. But her sister who is taking a course in Anatomy and Physiology informs her that having a fever might actually be beneficial. Pick the statement that is incorrect regarding the benefits of fever: (immunity) (a)Fever can retard (slow down) the multiplication of certain pathogens (b)Fever increases the metabolic rate of the body thereby encouraging immune reactions (c)Fever slows down the action of interferons (d)Fever can help promote tissue repair by retarding the physical activities of the host 2. Little Joseph is bitten by a stray dog and he is rushed to the ER. The attending physician gives him an antiserum with anti-rabies antibodies. Joseph is provided with _________ type of immunity: (immunity) (a)naturally acquired active immunity (b)naturally acquired passive immunity (c)artificially acquired active immunity (d)artificially acquired passive immunity 3. Oneka?s village has been struck by famine and like many other children of her village, she too shows signs of starvation (her arms and legs are really frail and her abdomen is swollen). All of the following statements correctly describe the physiological basis of her condition EXCEPT: (blood) (a)Hypoproteinemia has caused water to leave her blood vessels by osmosis (b)Lowered levels of albumin in her plasma have contributed greatly to lower than normal blood osmolarity. (c)Lowered levels of fibrinogen in her plasma have contributed greatly to lower than normal blood osmolarity. (d)Low protein intake has led to reduced synthesis of albumin resulting in lowered blood osmolarity 4. If the oxygen level in the blood is 100 mmHg and the oxygen level in the alveoli is 140 mmHg: (Respiration) (a)oxygen moves by simple diffusion from the alveoli into the blood (b)oxygen moves by simple diffusion from the blood into the alveoli (c)oxygen moves by active transport from the alveoli into the blood (d)oxygen moves by active transport from the blood into the alveoli 5. A recent news item reported a nurse who was suspected of killing his patients using an overdose of vecuronium, which is a skeletal muscle relaxant normally used in limited quantities during surgery. The victims stopped breathing and died quietly in their sleep because vecuronium causes: (Respiration) (a)massive vasodilation, leading to circulatory shock (b)relaxation of the heart muscle, leading to death (c)relaxation of the diaphragm, which makes inhalation impossible (d)constriction of the bronchioles thereby cutting off air supply to the lungs 6. Susan is an obese patient who has recently had a partial gastrectomy. Jacqui finally quit smoking, but the damage done over the years has resulted in her having to go to the hospital for sever pneumonia on a recurring basis. Then she has: (Acid base balance) (a)metabolic alkalosis (b)metabolic acidosis (c)respiratory acidosis (d)respiratory alkalosis 9. Michael has severe pernicious anemia. He frequently resists taking his vitamin B12 shots and ends up in the hospital complaining of shortness of breath. In order to compensate for the lack of RBCs (and therefore O2 carrying capacity) he ends up breathing more deeply and rapidly. Unfortunately, this sometimes leads to a change in his plasma pH. If so, he has: (Acid base balance) (a)metabolic alkalosis (b)respiratory acidosis (c)metabolic acidosis (d)respiratory alkalosis 10. Baby Carrie is born with an opening called Foramen ovale in the septum or wall between the ventricles. Which of the following is a likely consequence? 39. Resolved Question: Cat wheezing losing weight?
  40. 16 May 2008 at 11:55pm
My cat seen vet several times, multiple ex-rays and on steroids & antibiotics again. She wheezes, (mouth closed) and can see stomach contract as she forces air out. Happens most when eating or big movement, but also even when still. She's losing weight but tries to eat, though wheezing makes it difficult. Vets think allergic bronchitis or allergies, with upper resp. infection. On meds but only brought 1/2 way to normal and still wheezing. Dust free litter, vaccumed, indoors only. No vomiting or apparent diaherra. No eye or nasal discharge, except wet nose and can feel moisture when wheezing. X-ray does not show fluid in lungs, and I can't afford much more but she's my baby. This has been month since started at least! HELP!! In addition: Don't think it's a hairball, she's shorthaired and on anti-furball dry food with her wet food. Tried giving her hairball stuff (gels, etc) and she won't take it.

  45. Resolved Question: Question about baby teeth eruption????
  46. 15 May 2008 at 1:29pm
My son is 21 months old. He has his first 4 upper teeth. Which would be the central incisors and the lateral incisors. As well as both his top first molars. He does not have his canine which I'm not too worried about. However, his bottom teeth he only has his central inscisors and his first molars. Should I be worried that he doesn't have his bottom lateral inscisors. I thought they were supposed to be in by 16 months. I did take him to the dentist a few months back and they did x-rays. It showed the teeth were there. I know sometimes they have to cut the gums in order for teeth to break through. Should I be concerned that he doens't have those lateral inscisors?

  47. Resolved Question: Have you heard about what has happened at the Calgary Zoo?
  48. 15 May 2008 at 12:00am
There was a beautiful new exhibit of baby cow nosed sting rays. They were the most amazing little animals. Here's a picture of them: http://ca.news.yahoo.com/photo/13052008/24/photo/photos-n-canada-cownose-rays-calgary -zoo.html Since Sunday, thirty four of them have died. Only nine remain. The zoo and the police suspect foul play. They think that somebody may have put something in the tank that killed these fantastic little creatures. Who would do that? I mean, come on. My kids are crying. They loved them so much. Just an update: More have died. The total is now forty.

  51. Resolved Question: heres the difference?
  52. 14 May 2008 at 6:11am
orlando other than howard didnt have big bodies because lewis and hedo weight wise was too small and chauncey and rodney were bigger than jameer.against boston though is a whole other story kevin garnett, big baby, kendrick perkins, leon powe,pj brown and james posey to battle the likes of wallace, mcdyees, maxiell and ratliff.while ray allen or sam cassell is as big or bigger than billups and stuckey while paul pierce is nearly as tall and stronger than rip hamilton.rondo may give up a little size, but hes quick.so i see the pistons and celtics evenly match due to size.true or false? what do youll think?

  61. Resolved Question: What is the prognosis for my cat?
  62. 12 May 2008 at 12:38pm
My 11 year old sweet orange tabby was attacked by a dog on Thursday. I took him to the vet where he has been on IV fluids. They have done x-rays and a sonogram but found no internal injuries. He drinks on his own but will not eat. I have been feeding him with a syringe but his creatine levels are rising. Yesterday, he was acting more normal but still didn't eat on his own. I took him in to the vet this morning and they want me to leave him for several days and possibly put a feeding tube in. The problem is he gets really depressed when he is not with me or my other cat and that could make him not eat on his own. I don't want him to have a tube surgically put in if it is not necessary. He is my baby and I want him better. Any advice??? Does it sound right or is the vet just trying to make more money off me -- I have already paid over $1200. My cat's health is more important that $$ I just don't want him to go through unnecessary surgery. Thank you all for your answers. I will be visiting him at lunch to day and will talk with the vet regarding the surgery and consider it if he doesn't start eating. He usually never goes out but was sneaky the other day and got past me.

  73. Voting Question: lyrics crossing the line?
  74. 9 May 2008 at 11:08pm
Do we listen to lyrics anymore? On the radio there are these catchy tunes and just because they are pop sounding people don't realize that they are nasty. I've noticed that even the edited versions of songs being played are pretty graphic. Here is a new catchy song that is being played on the radio right now... Sexy can I Yeah, Yeahhh All we wanna know is.... (Sexy can I) [Chorus:] Sexy can I, just pardon my manners. Girl how you shake it, got a player it like (ohhhh) It's a kodak moment, let me go and get my camera All I wanna know is, sexy can I. Sexy can I, hit it from the front, then I hit it from the back. know you like it like that. then we take it to the bed, then we take it to the floor then we chill for a second, then we shake that ass some more Sexy can I, just pardon my manners. Girl how you shake it, got player it like (ohhhh) It's a kodak moment, let me go and get my camera All I wanna know is, sexy can I. [Yung Berg:] What up lil mama, it's ya boy Youngin G5 dipped in louis vuitton luggage (ay) Gotta love it, ya boy so fly All the ladies go (ohhh) when a lot go by. Gucci on her feet, Marc Jacob on her thigh She wanna ride or die with ya boy in the Chi. That's right, so I let her kiss the prince her boyfriend, she ain't missed him since. [Ray J:] Sexy can I, just pardon my manners. Girl how you shake it, got a player it like (ohhhh) It's a kodak moment, let me go and get my camera All I wanna know is, sexy can I. Sexy can I, keep it on the low. Got a girl at the crib, we can take it to the mo-mo. You can bring a friend, or you can ride solo. Let me get my camera, so we can take a photo. (ohh, ohh, ohh) Now go shawty, go shawty. Baby when we make love it's like, (Oh, ohh, ohh) [Yung Berg] (I don't know what your man is like but baby all I want to know is...sexy can I. Sexy can I, visit you at work While you sliding down the pole, no panties, no shirt. Then you climb back up the pole, then you drop and do the splits. How you make that pussy talk, Baby damn, u is da shit (Oh, ohh, ohh) Now go shawty, go shawty. I make it rain in the club like (Oh, ohh, ohh) [Yung Berg] (I don't know what your man is like but baby all I want to know is...Sexy can I [Yung Berg:] I don't care who's ya boy hittin, or who Ray Nella So when I give it to her, i know that she ain't tellin' See i'm a go getta and she a go getta You already know shit (Sexy can I) Sexy can I send for you red-eye Fresh out the pool no towel just let it air dry. And if you ain't f**kin' tonight Man you can watch that tour bus go by [Chorus:] Sexy can I, just pardon my manners. Girl how you shake it, got a player like (oh baby) It's a kodak moment, let me go and get my camera All I wanna no is, sexy can I. Sexy can I, hit it from the front, then I hit it from the back. know you like it like that. then we take it to the bed, then we take it to the floor then we chill for a second, then were back at it for more Sexy can I, just pardon my manners. Girl how you shake it, got a player it like (ohhhh) It's a kodak moment, let me go and get my camera All I wanna no is, sexy can I. Is that appropriate for radio? All they really bleep out on the radio is shit and I think they changed p*ssy to booty... I listen to nasty lyrics and laugh. It doesn't bother me if it's something that I choose to put in and listen to but I want to be able to have control over when I'm listening to this stuff. I don't expect to hear Too Short being played on the radio (not without bleeping out most of the songs). Maybe I'm just too old but I think that this is something to seriously consider. See, my 4 year old picks up on what he hears on the radio. He can sing just about any pop song there is. Sometimes he gets the lyrics wrong but for the most part he?s pretty accurate. I don't want him repeating some of these lyrics. What do you think?

  75. Voting Question: Dilemma...?
  76. 9 May 2008 at 9:39pm
My aunt was in the hospital today for back pain, so we babysitting her son (my two year old cousin.) I found out a few minutes ago that the reason they weren't doing anything for her (pain meds, x-ray, etc) was because she is pregnant. It's wonderful news - the pregnant part, not the back pain. However i am worried about one thing - their dog. They have a 60 lb German Shepherd mix whom they've been having aggression problems with. Now with a second baby on the way i am worried that they won't keep him - they had that argument the first time around and the dog barely won. Now if she has back pains, the new baby, my uncle is the one staying at home.... I don't want them to get rid of him but i understand their reasons. The only problem is i bet most shelters would either euthanize him or he wouldn't be re-homed due to his problems. And they can't really give him away due to those problems - they wouldn't know how to find him the proper home. I would keep him but i have Kiley and my mom doesn't want him here because he sheds, he "might be vicious", etc, etc. I've NEVER had a problem with him as far as the aggression goes - he has a few doggy friends i introduced him to! I don't want him to be killed or re-homed. I don't think he would stand it - he's very fearful, shy, and rather attached to them and to me. Any advice? He is dog aggressive, perfectly fine with humans. He has never bitten anyone or another dog, though that may be because they don't take him for walks when other dogs are out. They have a two year old and the dog did fine with him as a baby, so they aren't worried much about that. They are more concerned with the fact that he IS dog aggressive with them on walks. They are worried that people would be afraid to let their kids over, which i see as a valid point but seeing as the dog does nothing when people go in the house and is only aggressive to other dogs... well... THEY don't have time to bring him to obedience - though they have tried different in-home trainers with no success - because my aunt works and my uncle is the stay-at-home-dad who has way too much to do. As i said before, I have never witness severe dog aggression like they describe. I am willing to take him to class for them then relay info to them - i know the trainer so it wouldn't be a problem. I believe they see him as more of an "inconvenience" to them now that he has these problems and they have a child (soon to be children.) They use the aggression as an excuse. The only aggressive behavior i see is when other dogs bark at us first, and it's usually only ruffled fur and a bark - then he stops and calms down when i correct him - he has met other dogs with me. They say it's severe with them, and i never see it, maybe it's a "protection" thing? Maybe he knows i can protect myself due to my body language and energy but thinks they need protection? I have many theories but i'm still worried about them getting rid of him. I can understand the need if he is aggressive but i think part of their problem is that they don't work with him and they just get scared themselves. The dog is very shy and fearful himself so that could trigger something. I just have a problem seeing what they see as he DOES NOT react like that around me. Never has. Heck, today two dogs in his neighborhood (where he has the most problems, as opposed to mine) CHARGED us through an invisible fence, barking and snarling - he hid himself behind me and didn't do ANYTHING remotely aggressive. I think he wanted me to protect him..... His picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/25698377@N03/2474205207/ To clear up - dog aggressive, no human aggression, loves kids, timid around other people, no problems with me only them for some reason.

  77. Resolved Question: Baby names for special adoption?
  78. 9 May 2008 at 1:42pm
My wife and I are white, and we're going to adopt an African-American baby. Some of our family members are racist, so we were thinking they might be more receptive if we named the baby after one of those black people that white people love, like Ray Charles, Oprah, Dave Chapelle, or Sinbad. Can anyone else think of any other black people who white people love?

  83. Resolved Question: judges bias?
  84. 8 May 2008 at 3:40pm
Thursday, 04/21/05 State finds 18 instances of sloppy work by Harlan By ROB JOHNSON Staff Writer Board to weigh more charges against medical examiner A three-member panel from the state Board of Medical Examiners has so far substantiated 18 violations stemming from the long-running inquiry into the practice of Dr. Charles Harlan, a pathologist who spent three decades performing autopsies throughout Tennessee. Harlan was once medical examiner for Davidson County and chief medical examiner for the state, but now he faces the possibility of civil fines and the revocation of his doctor's license. The panel resumes its open deliberations today and could rule during the session on whether Harlan deserves any sanctions. The state Department of Health has filed charges in 20 autopsy-related incidents, including allegations of botched autopsies, sloppy record-keeping, wrong diagnoses and callous behavior to families. Dr. Charles Harlan Harlan attorney Dan Warlick counters that his client is an excellent pathologist whose current troubles stem from a conflict with the man who succeeded him as Metro's medical examiner, Dr. Bruce Levy. Harlan operates a private business that offers medical-examiner services to several counties throughout Middle Tennessee. So does Levy, his competitor. ''This all came up so that we can get Dr. Harlan out of Dr. Levy's way,'' Warlick said, a contention Levy has heard often and denied every time. Warlick told the panel during his closing arguments yesterday that for state investigators to have found only 20 cases worth bringing after Harlan's 30 years of practice was not that bad a record. ''Don't throw the baby out with the bath water,'' he pleaded. Robert O'Connell, the attorney representing the Health Department, countered: ''The idea that 20 charges ... do not represent 'that bad of a record' is not an idea that I share. The state has proven the charges that remain before you.'' Indeed, the panel seems to agree. So far, at least. It includes two physicians, Dr. Sam Barnes of Cookeville and Dr. Allen Edmondson of Memphis. Sitting with them is Nina Yeiser of Pickwick Landing. She is the panel's consumer representative. Meeting roughly once a month for the past two years, the panel has heard testimony about the often gruesome and troubling details of determining how someone died: Malnourished children with maggots in soiled diapers. Suspiciously violent deaths. Infants with severe head fractures. Shackled prisoners burned alive in prison vans. A suspected criminal's corpse incorrectly identified, only to have the man turn up alive later in a traffic stop. In all, the panel is considering 20 such cases. Harlan has given testimony or been otherwise involved in hundreds of criminal cases over the years. Of the cases before the panel, those involving possible criminal prosecutions have long since been resolved in the courts. The first case had to do with a fax that Harlan sent to officials at a Bank of America branch in Madison. They needed confirmation of a customer's death so that they could open her safe deposit box. Harlan had already had previous discussions with family members, but the bank needed more. So he wrote ''M.L. is dead'' on a blank piece of paper and faxed it over. The bank asked for something more definitive, so an admittedly frustrated Harlan pulled out some letterhead and wrote ''M.L. is dead. She is green and has maggots crawling on her'' and faxed that. ''I believe that this constitutes unprofessional behavior,'' panel member Yeiser said. ''I don't want to discuss it. My mind is made up.'' Administrative Law Judge Tom Stovall told her that the panel would need to explain its reasoning on the record. That set the tone for a long afternoon. Twenty feet away, Harlan, Warlick and O'Connell listened silently while the panel dissected case after case. Occasionally, Stovall would advise them on how to proceed. Each case was different. Barnes, Edmondson and Yeiser frequently agreed, but they had to hash out whether a case was an example of unprofessional conduct, dishonorable conduct, a pattern of negligence, malpractice or a combination. Several cases involved Harlan's frequent diagnosis of sudden-infant death syndrome. In the one SIDS case discussed yesterday, the panel noted that a review of Harlan's 1997 autopsy found that the child actually died of acute cocaine intoxication. That led to a homicide charge. During that trial, Harlan testified that the sample he drew was contaminated by a dirty needle, causing the cocaine to be found by those who later reviewed the case. Either way, panel members concluded, Harlan's speculation was not professional. ''And that violates the standard of care,'' panel member Edmondson said. In another child death, Harlan diagnosed blunt-force trauma as the cause of death. He found the manner of death to be accidental. But questions about potential child abuse arose, and the body was exhumed. A second autopsy found multiple rib fractures, broken arms and an intentional skull fracture. In 1997, the child's father was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. ''I think it was incompetent,'' panel member Barnes said of Harlan's autopsy. ''I think you would have to rule out child abuse,'' said Edmondson. Earlier, Warlick had told the panel that Harlan's operations were underfunded because the state did not cover his autopsy costs adequately. Full-body X-rays and extremely meticulous autopsies, while certainly desirable, were not always something Harlan could afford to do. ''He's in trouble if he does,'' said Warlick, ''and he's in trouble if he doesn't.'' The board found Harlan guilty of nine counts of unprofessional or dishonorable conduct, two counts of violating Tennessee's criminal statutes, three counts of making false statements or representations, one count of fraud or deceit practicing medicine, one count of making or signing certificates known to be false, and two counts of malpractice. The panel's decision on whether to allow Harlan to continue to practice could have implications on a number of Tennessee counties that contract for his services. Chief Deputy Mike Billing of Cannon County said he was surprised to learn of yesterday's findings. Harlan has been that county's medical examiner for several years. ''We have never had any problem at all in using Dr. Harlan,'' he said. ''We don't know what we'll do now, but I guess we don't have a choice except to use Dr. Levy if Dr. Harlan loses his license.'' Other counties that contract with Harlan include Wilson, Franklin and Maury. Leon Alligood contributed to this report. Rob Johnson can be reached at 664-2162 or rhjohnson@tennessean.com. 85. Resolved Question: Adult with a Baby Tooth?
  86. 8 May 2008 at 2:07pm
I am in my early thirties, have all my wisdom teeth out, and have never had braces. Not because I don't need them - I do - but because I was not in the position to have them done at the appropriate age. In spite of this, they look OK. I have one adult baby tooth - upper left canine. We know there's a permanent tooth in the roof of my mouth, because I had it x-rayed some time ago...it just never descended. The baby tooth is not wobbly or painful and shows no sign of moving. I was told a while ago that I should have it extracted and have the permanent tooth pulled down...but the reasons I was given seemed cosmetic, since the rest of my teeth were in and they hadn't turned out too badly. It seems like it fixing it would affect my whole mouth, and I admit I'm not crazy about the idea of getting braces at this point in my career. If nothing is otherwise wrong with my baby tooth, are there any real, inevitable medical consequences to just leaving it there? Thanks in advance!

  100. 5 May 2008 at 12:53pm
I just did a pregnancy test over the weekend and its positive. This is my first pregnancy but I am just worried because week before that I had my yearly teeth x-ray. Also, that same week I probably took 3 glass of wine. This happens out of ignorance that I am pregnant. Will that affect the baby? I forgot to mention they don't put any lead apron on me.< >
