NSI (Network Solutions) used to be $35 a year. They are/were the company that registered all domain names no matter where they were purchased from. Registering through them directly used to be the most expensive...not sure if that is the case anymore.
I have used GoDaddy.com for my registrar for the past 4yrs now. I do not have any complaints with them and just the other day they refunded the reduced cost they negotiated with ICAN on the fee they must pay them for each domain name. It wasn't much, but it was the meaning that they would not pocket the money they were just refunded. They do offer other services, though I can not tell you about them as I do not need them, nor use them. I would suggest not going to any registrar who charges over $10 a year for your domain. There are more than plenty out there that charge less than $10 a year. So paying more just is not a thing you have to do.
Just register a transfer with your new Yahoo account. You will then have to approve the transfer with your old account. I would check the prices and service with http://www.TemeculaValleyDomains.net for transfers before you commit to Yahoo.
When you signed up, you probably didn't read all the options very closely. Yahoo offers very good web hosting, but they try very hard (almost deceptively) to get you to take more expensive options. I have almost always had very good experiences with Yahoo. Just call their customer service people and they should be able to work it out. Be patient, since you are probably the one that made the mistake by checking the wrong box. Call their sales number at 866-781-9246. If that's not the right number, they should be able to tell you who to call.

I found the following summary on the internet. Hope this helps. There is a expiration process for domain names. During the first 30 days of expiration the owner can renew the domain name at current registration prices. After the 30 day grace period the name will enter a 30 day redemption period during this time the name may be renewed by the owner for a service fee Five days after the end of the redemption period the name will made available for anyone to register. I wouldn't wait for this to happen, people buy expired domains every day and it could be difficult to get the name. Unfortunately you are at the mercy of your registrar in this matter. The one thing you can check is your whois record at http://www.whois.sc if it still shows your registration information you may still be in the 30 day grace period. If this is the case contact your registrar with this information and maybe they will deal a little. As a last resort you can contact http://www.icann.org they are the governing body that monitors domain names
Not free, but less than a buck. (Well its almost free) http://www.TemeculaValleyDomains.net
With microsoft Office live you can eighter get a new domain name or transfer a existing domain name all the procedures are in their FAQ section, as far as transfering your domain name from Microsoft Office Live to another Registrar you can do that after 90 days since your last change, both these subjects are covered in their FAQ's so to answer your question yes you can bring a existing domain name to Office Live and if you want to quit you can take it with you. Additional Information: I currently have 2 domains through officelive, http://www.silvermoonfurniture.com and http://www.newmtntavern.com go to your favorite search engine and use keywords silver moon furniture and new mountain tavern and see how these sites rate :P any doubt that you have full ownership of domains just do a whois on eighter of my domains to see that you have full ownership
I suppose it is because ir was already taken by Iran, so they combined the i from Ireland with the e from Eire and came up with ie.
.id.au costs $35 for 2 years .net.au $49.95 for 2 years. No hassles and I am able to have my domains hosted anywhere. I have been with them for several years.
The domain registrar can depend on the actual domain you are trying to register. For example - all .com.au domains have to go through melbourneit (to start with) as they are the primary domain holder for the .com.au domain. If you're after .com.au then contact melbourneit first. You can then transfer your domain elsewhere for hosting purposes. If you're after anything else - you can pretty much go for wherever is cheapest. Be aware that some registrars are better than others at keeping your private information safe...
domain name registration is wher you register your name with DNS servers. Essentially everything on the internet is linked to an IP address. However no one wants to remember the IP address of every web site server on the planet (by typing 125.454.44.694 etc) so they have different names like www.yahoo.com. DNS servers essentailly take the name yahoo.com and convert it into a valid IP address for your computer to connect to and retrieve the web page from. Webhosting is a service provided by companies like godaddy and what not to allow people to store web pages on there servers for a small fee. Essentially you go to them when you don't have a web server of your own to host your web page and they will put it up for you. So if you want a web page under the address of imfreakincool.com then you would create a web page and pay godaddy to host it for you. Go daddy takes care of the DNS registration process to make it so when people type in your web address it will connect to the server where your web page is located. I hope that answers your question and that it was clear enough.
There are no legitimate sites that give away free domain names. However, there are sites that offer free domain hosting, but most likely you'll have restrictions. (Ads, etc.) If you're a starter, it's best just to settle on a freeserver like Geocities or Freewebs until you can purchase your own domain name. In my opinion, I don't think a person should own a domain unless they can make their own graphics, code their own html/whatever, and learn how to use a FTP program.
