Okay for me your question is so great. Because my High School's Football team sucks too. And I really need to rant about it. Because they only won like 3 games this year and that was against the other really sucky teams in the league. Here's one I found on a google search: http://www.marchingbandplanet.com/forums/index.php?showforum=84 Something you could do is form a blog and rant about it on their i would seriously join you their! :)
most judging agencies have rules that expressly forbid that sort of thing. the only time i know a student can legally play for a different school is when their own school does not offer band. speak with the directors, look into the rules, you dont want to ruin the season for two groups!
Marching band has its roots in the early practice of having a fifer and drummer march along with the army to help keep pace. This was common during the time of the American Revolution. It continued to be involved with the military, and the US Marine Corp band is still one of the best. Today, some marching band maneuvers, such as attention and parade rest, are based on its military history.
U of I all the way! haha, i say this cuz ill b goin there next year. ill b drumming in my classes (cuz im a music performance major) and ill b drumming oustide of class (for drumline). in a drumline perspective, i would either U of I (urbana-champaign), or michigan state. they both have clean top-notched drumlines...im not gunna lie, but prolly one of the tightest drumlines in the country!
Bands of America It hosts about 14 regional events all across the United States, in addition to the Grand National Championship http://www.bands.org/index2.asp
Core style stick mainly to the fundamentals of marching. There marching is based off military steps. There shows are usually not flashy and won't have scatter-drills in them but can be just as complex . Show bands play more top 40's than core. Core usually sticks to the oldies for the most part. The Core drill is more symmetrical than show.
It helps the drummer know where to grip the stick. Also, tape helps to keep the stick from breaking (mostly) since drummers use alot of gocks and rim-clicks in the music.
Performance, timing, dificulty of the music, marching, style, and general apperance.
if they are truly marching bands they should have woodwinds. are you perhaps seeing brass bands or drum bugle corps? they have an entirely different tradition that has developed a culture of their own, (no woodwinds allowed). most of this culture comes from the military brass band traditions of europe and america.
Marching bands evolved out of military bands. As musicians became less and less important in directing the movement of troops on the battlefield, the bands moved into increasingly ceremonial roles. An intermediate stage which provided some of the instrumentation and music for marching bands was the modern brass band, which also evolved out of the military tradition. Many military traditions survive in modern marching band. Bands that march in formation will often be ordered to dress their ranks and cover down their files. They may be called to attention, and given orders like about face and forward march. Uniforms of many marching bands still resemble military uniforms. Outside of police and military organizations, modern marching band is most commonly associated with American football, and specifically the halftime show. Many U.S. universities had bands before the twentieth century. The first modern halftime show by a marching band at a football game was by the University of Illinois Marching Illini in 1907 at a game against the University of Chicago.[1] Another innovation that appeared at roughly the same time as the field show and marching in formations was the fight song. University fight songs are often closely associated with the university’s band. Many of the more recognizable and popular fight songs are widely utilized by high schools across the country. Three university fight songs commonly used by high schools are The University of Michigan’s “The Victors”, Notre Dame’s “Victory March”, and the United States Naval Academy’s “Anchors Aweigh” Other changes in marching band have been: adoption of the tradition by secondary schools (high schools, junior high schools, and middle schools) the addition of a dance team, and/or baton twirlers/majorettes the addition of color guard members
The Music Man not only features a marching band, but also has a song entitled 76 Trombones, which celebrates a particularly good performance.
I love marching band so much. I started my 8th grade year and have had special memories. I remember going to the Chick Fil A Bowl and after watching the college marching bands play that I want to do college marching band. My mothers a band director. All my cousins do marching band, its a family tradition. It'll look good on college apps. Also you'll meet good people and have a really good friendships. I know when I went through some hard times with family, I had to leave marching band for a week to go to a funeral, the whole marching band texted me, called me and making me cards.

I got a marching band scholarship to play in the band. Music majors get paid more than non-music majors, though. I can't remember the amount the non-music majors got, but I got the following: Freshman year: $200 Sophomore year: $200 Junior year: $400 Senior year: $450 I also got a watch at the end of my 3rd year, because instrumental music education majors are required to be in marching band for 2 years. They reward people who stay longer than that, ed. majors or no. Times have changed since then (I graduated in 2000), and funding sucks these days, but they might still give the scholarships. Oh, I went to the University of Northern Colorado.
