  1. Resolved Question: Music at university?
  2. 6 Feb 2008 at 2:33pm
I think I want to do music at uni but I want it focused on performance rather than the more academic stuff like musicology and I definitely don't want to compose! Obviously, I realise you can't avoid musicology completely, but can you avoid composition? I was tempted by music colleges, but they're just not for me, despite their focus on performance....anyone got any ideas?? Universities in the UK that don't have composing on the course?

  13. Resolved Question: I prefer to use pure tone rather than vibrato?
  14. 9 Nov 2007 at 8:05am
Don't get me wrong, I can do both. My vibrato is slight and a bit on the fast side. I feel no tension when I do vibrato and I also DO NOT feel tension when I do pure tone. Instead of concentrating on keeping the vibrato controlled, I concentrate my tone into the mask...almost like a bull ready to charge. And I feel no tension. I was wondering if that's why most people feel tension when they try to control the vibrato. I have forced it straight and I did feel the tension, then, because all of my concentration on was my throat. Could it be a pyschological effect maybe? I'm a musicology major. I should write a paper on this. Reasons I enjoy pure tone more than vibrato: 1. The music itself comes across as clearer and cleaner. 2. My head rings when I sing. I am wanting to eventually get my Masters in Historical Performance of Early Music in singing. My voice type is right for this. Yet, I am criticized by my current voice teacher who is dead set on the Classical Period and beyon Why is it that I have no tension with straight tone and others do? Usually others that have straight tone and tension have no vibrato, whereas I have one? And why does my voice teacher have to be set in his ways and call Early Music (foundations o modern music) crap? (to use his words)

  15. Resolved Question: Feeling down about a rare voice type, because my school em...
  16. 5 Nov 2007 at 6:03pm
The Music faculty keeps telling me I have a gorgeous voice. I have been in 2 operas (chorus), but I prefer the style of the English school which is pure tone, darker than operatic tone, and more reserved. I want to specialize in early music vocal performance practice someday. (as as well as musicology in early music). I am naturally a soprano, yet I was put on alto. While I am enjoying being on alto as it gives me a chance to hear and sing the harmony, I feel kinda dejected from the sopranos. For the Bach, I sang with this same tone (In the Baroque, vibrato was an ornamentation), yet I did not make the finals even when a bunch of the altos made it and used a ton of vibrato. I did not completely straight-tone it, but added color when the music called for it. So, I don't know if the choir director has something against the way I sound or what. I was trained in the English school, which focuses on room in the mouth, semi-dark tone, tons of resonance, and senza vibrato. i feel down. Ok, let me re-explain. Early music uses straight tone. Back in the medieval/renaissance/baroque period, vibrato was used as an ornamentation (check your baroque theory/music history textbooks). I have vibrato (i didn't a few years ago), and I can produce it freely, but I prefer singing in the early style because this is what I want to specialize in. I want to be able to perform this type of music accurately. And not everybody has vibrato. I know some people who completely relax their throats, necks, entire upper body, and folds and still there is no vibrato. Also, better to be on pitch than around it.

  32. 8 Jul 2007 at 2:58am
    1. One good fella called last night and told me about this. The jobs often do not match with your own qualified skills or what you´ve learned at the university before. The most worst of all is: the salary is less & not correct with your qualified professional skills. 2. And some exclusive subjects & sectors like musicology, international literatures, the editorial motion picture journalism staffs and the art entertainments totally lack or do rarely exist Is it a better idea to apply these positions abroad ?

  33. Resolved Question: William Strunk, Jr.?
  34. 3 May 2007 at 1:10am
The Elements of Style (1918) of William Strunk, Jr. was revised by E. B. White in last century?s late 50?s and renamed as ?Oliver Strunk: The Elements of Style?. The question is: Who is this Mr./Ms Oliver Shrunk, What is the relationship of the book with Oliver Struck, and What is the relationship between William Strunk, Jr. and Oliver Struck? I notice that there was a Mr. William Oliver Shrunk (1901-1980), a professor of musicology at Princeton University and therefore is a totally different person from William Strunk, Jr. (1869-1946), who was the Professor of English at Cornell University. The only hint I have is that Oliver Strunk may mean Olivia Emilie Locke, the wife of William Strunk, Jr. Allegra, thanks, I read few articles about the biography of Mr. William Oliver Strunk, the music professor but no hint shown that he was son of William (yes, should not be William again) Strunk Jr. This Mr. Oliver Strunk must be another person, most probably son of Wiiliam Strunk, Jr; but just no substantial proof found!

  37. Resolved Question: Does anyone know any "play psychiatry" games?
  38. 5 Feb 2007 at 12:02am
I loved playing a game that involved me being the psychiatrist and helping these cute little "abused" stuffed animals, where you had to figure out what exactly happened to them using dream analyzing, musicology, how they cope with agression, etc. Does anyone know any similar sites as to where the player is the psychiatrist? Here's the link to the game I played if you're interested: http://www.parapluesch.de/whiskystore/test.htm It's sooooo cute.

  56. 11 Jun 2006 at 12:44am
Guys: DAMMIT SHE´S SO HOT WHAT DO I DO?? Girls: This girl is amazing, she?s like 1.77 meters tall, Mexican, like those from the "telenovelas" or Mexican love TV. serials.... Black hair, black eyes, tinned white skin (She goes 4 times a year to the beach) and she is really really fun. She?s a friend of a friend and she usually goes to the same parties as us? I really wouldn?t ask this to myself, the problem is that he never does anything to be with her, because he says she intimidates him. There?s this girl he also likes, she knows her since kindergarten, we?re 24 years old now, he always asks her out, to romantic dinners and dates, they talk for hours on the phone, but he hasn?t even kissed her. I don?t understand him, he?s not a virgin, he had a couple of girlfriends before. We even nicknamed him ?the fast and furious? LOL! I also like music a lot I play on a band, and she studies musicology?. She?s perfect, but I don´t talk too much to her because of my friend? What do I do?
