Author Sonya Luehrmann recounts how women desperately search to find a husband "to put one's personal life in order, to settle down with a stable family." And here in the United States, some men find American ladies to be a little too, shall we say, high-maintenance for their tastes. Before long over 200 match-making services around the world had sprouted up like a clutch of springtime tulips. A few years ago University of Pittsburgh professor Nicole Constable set out to probe the inner workings of these dating agencies. In her book Romance on a Global Stage, Constable revealed the international match-makers were simply responding to a human need for companionship and love. Many men who marry foreign brides "went to great lengths to ensure their partner's comfort and happiness in the United States," she noted. But feminists are rankled by any hint that their nostrum for female liberation may be curtailing American women's marriage prospects. Worse, some of these foreign women actually aspire to be mothers and homemakers. Imagine that! So the Sourpuss Sisters conspired to put the kibosh on the operation. They knew convincing Congress to regulate romance would be a hard sell. So they resorted to their tried and true formula of hackneyed stereotypes, outright demagoguery, and appeals to male chivalry. It was Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington who quarterbacked the legislative strategy. First she brandished the notion of "mail-order brides," casting foreign women as victims of predatory males. Then she dubbed international dating services as "marriage brokers," conjuring up the image of a rogue operation trading lives for dollars. On July 13, 2004 the Senate Foreign Relations Committee scheduled a hearing to air the issue. No dating services or happily-betrothed foreign women were invited to testify ? their comments would not likely fit the script. During her testimony, Cantwell made the startling claim that match-making services serve as a nefarious front for international human trafficking. She concluded, "there is a growing epidemic of domestic abuse among couples who meet via international marriage brokers." As proof of that "epidemic," she highlighted the cases of three abused women. Cantwell's depiction of comely maidens being seduced into prostitution rings was more than Sen. Sam Brownback could resist, and before long he signed on as a leading co-sponsor of the International Marriage Broker Regulation Act. With liberals and conservatives now on board, IMBRA's political star was rising. But it turns out that Senator Cantwell's supposition that dating services drag women into a life of sex slavery and indentured servitude was nothing more than a feminist tall-tale. There was the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service report that revealed, "less than 1 percent of the abuse cases now being brought to the attention of the INS can be attributed to the mail-order bride industry." I've noticed that a lot (I might even say most) pen pal websites have some mention of the country Ghana. Either the website asks that citizens of Ghana not participate, or the individual ads say "I'm interested in penpals from anywhere except Ghana." For a short while, I had a penpal from Ghana, and he was pretty overbearing, but I can't imagine that being a reason to ban an entire nation from submitting or answering penpal ads. Anyone know what the deal is? Don's say "They're just racist," because that's not an informative answer. Has anyone had one of these "bad experiences" that ads so often refer to?

I've created a website for making computer graphics; avatars, banners, desktop wallpapers, etc. I've got a few members but not many and site traffic is pretty slow. It's a free website and if you join you are able to learn to make graphics, post them to show others, share brushes and techniques, and request graphics from others. Any ideas on how I can get more people to come? I've already: 1. Submitted my site url to google and other search engines. 2. Told friends about it. And I don't have a myspace or any other sort of blog. My site was built using yahoo site builder. After customers "submit" their info on my various forms, at least half are getting an error message "page not found". They are not re-directed to my "Thank you" screen. The data they enter is making it to me but the customers are getting page not found error messages. Of course every time I use it... I have NO problems and I am redirected to the proper page on my site! I have placed a disclaimer on my site warning this could happen... yahoo said it was my customers fire wall that was causing the message... can anyone confirm this? It's bad for business when your customers get error message :o)

What is one, quick thing i can do to get hundreds/thousands of readers to my site just once. I.e., I submitted my bro's site to collegehumor.com as a link a few years back, and they accepted it. He received 17,000 hits in one day. How can I do THAT? :P

I was at work today and I was in a hurry. I was on a web page which had a complicated link which I needed to remember so I could log onto that site at home. So instead of copying it, I put my USB in and clicked "Save page as" in my web browser thinking that it would save the web page and its link. But it didn't. I have the web page in front of me but its the saved version and with a web address which is my USB directory (file:///G:/index.cfm.htm... I can navigate away from the page to links on it but I can't submit the online form I needed to submit. I have tried a keyword search and phoning colleges to find out the site but I have had no success. How do I find out the actual website of that saved web page Thanks for the reply kiran k. I posted a final project that consisted of 4 different tables with 10 questions that needed answers in each one. In one of the tables, I did not have time to fill in 2 of the questions. I feel fairly confident in my answers for most of the questions I did get to answer, so should I pass? (I had a deadline to get this submitted, and I made it right on the minute, but if I had handed it in late, I would have gotten 0 points out of 250. That is why I did not have time to fill in 2 of the boxes.) The reason I am posting a question on here is because I am having a difficult time finding any answers on the college web site.

they were very happy with an article I wrote for them several years ago. I've found several items in the computer Q and A section of Y!A that would fit in very nicely in the middle of the article. My question: Do I need to ask permission from the people at Y!A, or is the info on this site public domain? I don't want to ask my editors because I'm trying to hide how incredibly insecure I am about freelance writing. (I have a friend with a degree in English, who carefully edits everything I write before I submit it.)

I am making a website where people can submit their stories and others can read them and leave feedback. All stories and feedback are preread before being posted. All kinds of stories from horror to children to spiritual to jokes and song lyrics; all original from new artist. I am not paying for stories. I am not charging for stories. Is this i good or bad idea? Does anyone have anything they can submit? I plan on having the site online in a week but I am short creative writing on every subject. Once stories are plenty I was thinking about a fan voted contest and give away something I have purchased.

I'm thinking about switching my auto insurance from GEICO to USAA, but had a few questions. And since it's the weekend, they're not open when I called. I purchased a used vehicle about 4 months, so my insurance went up, and have heard great things about USAA, so here goes,,,, Question #1 - From all of the research I've done on auto insurance, USAA is approximately $125.00 dollars cheaper for a 6 month premium than GEICO. This sounds too good to be true, but I did the free quote steps over and over again on the site, if you have have USAA auto insurance, does this sound right? Question #2 - I submitted a quote for property insurance as well, and that quote was $10.00 a month, does this sound about right? I did this quote with website assistance on how much my property is worth. Question #3 - My 6 month auto insurance premiums gets paid in 4 monthly installments in a 6 month window, does USAA do this as well, or do they do it by monthly deduction? Thanks to all in advance

I tried www.siteadvisor.com, but it didn't have anything on it (I submitted it, but it was only an automated testing). Any personal experiences? It had all these trust logo's ('Goldblah certified' kind of thing) on the side, but when I went to the websites that certified mp4mobile, the logos could all be bought or the links were broken. There was some other red flag (not a serious one though) but i forgot it.
