  3. Opening minds about cell phones for learning
  4. 30 Jan 2008 at 1:28pm
    Listen
pIn preparation for the series of of workshops I#8217;ll be sharing here in Oklahoma at both the a href="http://www.k20center.org/okacts/winter-institute/"OU K-20 Center#8217;s Midwinter conference/a tomorrow, the a href="http://www.oktech.org/"Oklahoma Technology Association#8217;s annual conference/a next week, as well as a district technology day a href="http://www.yukonps.com/"in Yukon/a and a href="http://www.ncce.org/"NCCE/a later in the month, I reviewed the a href="http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1043898959196049305#038;hl=en"26 minute film #8220;Mobile Phones, Mobile Minds#8221; from Teachers TV on Google Video/a. (Thanks to a href="http://thinkingmachine.pbwiki.com/"Karen Montgomery/a for this reference!) The video highlights students and teachers in the UK who have been experimenting with the use of mobile phones for learning, and the issues which are raised by so many mobile phones already in the hands of young people./p pembed style="width:400px; height:326px;" id="VideoPlayback" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId=1043898959196049305#038;hl=en" flashvars="" /embed/p pIn my sessions, I may use an excerpt from the middle of the video where teachers as well as students talk about their own experiences using mobile phones for learning, and the impact the devices had on the learning culture overall. I think this clip is excellent because it is not simply theoretical: These are real teachers and students who have been using mobile phones to support learning, and their perspectives therefore carry greater credibility since they are not simply offering conjectures about #8220;what if?#8221;/p pOne of the key issues to discuss relating to mobile phones in the classroom is WHY we should utilize them at all for learning. The two most persuasive reasons I understand at present for using cell phones for learning are:/p ol libStudents learn to make good decisions by MAKING DECISIONS./b (This is something I heard a href="http://www.altruists.org/static/files/The%20Schools%20Our%20Children%20Deserve% 20%28Alfie%20Kohn%29.mp3"Alfie Kohn cite recently on a podcast of a book talk he shared/a.) If we truly want students to develop traditional as well as a href="http://coe.k-state.edu/digitalcitizenship/"digital citizenship skills/a, and we want them to develop their capacities for ethical decisionmaking, we have to provide them with opportunities to MAKE DECISIONS. Cell phones do NOT fit into a classroom which is organized traditionally as the teacher serving as the sole font of knowledge. If the classroom experience is 100% about #8220;filling a pail#8221; (the students#8217; brains with information) then cell phones have no place. If, on the other hand, we are interested in helping students not only learn content knowledge but also how to MAKE CONNECTIONS between knowledge domains (something a href="http://school20.siglersite.com/2008/01/29/memorization-the-mind-and-making-conn ections/"James Stigler contends should be a hallmark of school 2.0/a) and develop their capacities and dispositions for ethical decision making, then utilizing cell phones for learning in appropriate ways makes a great deal of sense./li libStudents learn best when they PARTICIPATE./b This is the case for active instead of passive learning. Inviting students to thoughtfully and appropriately use cell phones to support their learning process is, in most cases, an inherently active process. (Watching a video on a cell phone might not be, but using the mobile device as a portable audio recorder, a digital camera for documentation of images taken #8220;in the field,#8221; or even to a href="http://www.polleverywhere.com/"respond to a mobile poll/a all involve active participation.) If educators are interested in active (and therefore more effective) learning strategies, then I think the topic of ways cell phones can be used for learning will be viewed as relevant and timely./li /ol pI#8217;m not sharing a session explicitly focused on a href="http://teachdigital.pbwiki.com/cellphones"#8220;Cell Phones for Learning#8221;/a till later this month in Yukon and at NCCE, but I will certainly touch on these ideas in my session a href="http://teachdigital.pbwiki.com/balancing"#8220;Balancing Access and Freedom with Safety and Liability Protection#8221;/a tomorrow at OU and next week at OTA. Basic questions about learning goals, the purpose of schools, and and the role of technology keep coming up in my presentations and workshops with teachers as well as administrators, and I think this is a good pattern./p pI#8217;ll close with the following quotation from Alfie Kohn, on page 150 of his book a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html%3FASIN=0618083456%26tag=discoveringharry %26lcode=xm2%26cID=2025%26ccmID=165953%26location=/o/ASIN/0618083456%253FSubscription Id=02ZH6J1W0649DTNS6002"#8220;The Schools Our Children Deserve: Moving Beyond Traditional Classrooms and #8220;Tougher Standards.#8221;/a He writes:/p blockquotepAs one survey after another has confirmed, students are rarely invited to become active participants in their own education, whether they are in kindergarten or college. Indeed, the story of American schools is#8211; and always has been#8211; the story of doing things ito/i students rather than working iwith/i them. The opposite of being controlled is to be able to make decisions, to have one#8217;s voice heard./p/blockquote pI#8217;m committed to the proposition that as moral educators and leaders in our communities, we need to equip students to become ethical decision-makers and constructively contributing citizens. It#8217;s worthwhile to consider not just our #8220;theoretical#8221; support of that idea, but our OPERATIONAL implementation of it in our classrooms each day. We don#8217;t have to use cell phones to help students cultivate their capacities for ethical decision-making and become actively engaged in their own learning journeys, but I think cell phones can be extremely useful tools if we want to pursue those pedagogic goals together./p p!-- Technorati Tags Start --/p pTechnorati Tags:br / a href="http://technorati.com/tag/cellphone" rel="tag"cellphone/a, a href="http://technorati.com/tag/school" rel="tag"school/a, a href="http://technorati.com/tag/education" rel="tag"education/a, a href="http://technorati.com/tag/learning" rel="tag"learning/a, a href="http://technorati.com/tag/kohn" rel="tag"kohn/a, a href="http://technorati.com/tag/alfiekohn" rel="tag"alfiekohn/a, a href="http://technorati.com/tag/change" rel="tag"change/a, a href="http://technorati.com/tag/decision" rel="tag"decision/a, a href="http://technorati.com/tag/making" rel="tag"making/a, a href="http://technorati.com/tag/ethics" rel="tag"ethics/a, a href="http://technorati.com/tag/character" rel="tag"character/a /p p!-- Technorati Tags End --/p script type="text/javascript" addthis_url = 'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.speedofcreativity.org%2F2008%2F01%2F30%2Fopening-minds-about-cell-p hones-for-learning%2F'; addthis_title = 'Opening+minds+about+cell+phones+for+learning'; addthis_pub = ''; /scriptscript type="text/javascript" src="http://s7.addthis.com/js/addthis_widget.php?v=12" /script

  5. Two Million Minutes: A call for educational change
  6. 28 Jan 2008 at 8:35pm
    Listen
pa href="http://www.2mminutes.com/"The documentary film #8220;Two Million Minutes#8221;/a highlights stark contrasts in the educational experiences, perspectives, and expectations of high school students in the United States, China, and India. The film#8217;s title is derived from the mathematical statistic that following eighth grade graduation, students have approximately two million minutes to spend until they graduate from high school. While I have not yet seen the film, it appears to offer an evocative window into the very different worldviews of students in different nations facing vocational as well as life opportunities in our #8220;flat world.#8221; a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niU1E3SSTAM"The film#8217;s YouTube trailer/a gives a taste for its focus and main points./p pobject width="425" height="355" param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/niU1E3SSTAM#038;rel=1"/param param name="wmode" value="transparent"/paramembed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/niU1E3SSTAM#038;rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"/embed/object/p p / The call for change in the largely static educational system of the United States is not new, of course. Some people point to a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Nation_at_Risk"the 1983 report #8220;A Nation at Risk#8221;/a as a watershed moment when the issue of educational reform and change in the United States began to capture the attention of politicians as well as the general public on a broader scale. The need for a renewed focus on science, mathematics, and engineering received strong attention in the late 1950s and 1960s in the U.S. following the launch of a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sputnik"Sputnik/a. Reformers like a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Caldwell_Holt"Holt/a, a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Dewey"Dewey/a, a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paulo_Freire"Freire/a, and many others had made convincing cases for the cause of progressive educational reform before Sputnik or #8220;Nation at Risk#8221; become topics of dinner conversation in U.S. households and legislative halls, however. Most recently (this past weekend, in fact) a wide variety of educators from around the United States as well as other countries (attending in person as well as via virtual means) converged at the Philadelphia Science Leadership Academy for the a href="http://educon20.wikispaces.com/"EduCon 2.0 Conference/a, to discuss (among other topics) the prospects for broad-based as well as localized educational reform in the United States. If you missed the conference (as I did) but still want to join in the learning and conversations, check out the UStream.TV videos a href="http://educon20.wikispaces.com/EduConTV"posted on the EduConTV wiki page/a as well as the a href="http://hitchhikr.com/index.php?conf_id=315"HitchHikr aggregated blog postings/a of attendees, both face-to-face and virtual./p p / I am interested in seeing the film #8220;Two Million Minutes,#8221; but hope it articulates a vision for educational reform which goes beyond the destructive and counter-productive rhetoric about higher standards, rigor, and accountability which has ushered in the age of a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Child_Left_Behind"NCLB/a in United States classrooms. As a href="http://www.altruists.org/static/files/The%20Schools%20Our%20Children%20Deserve% 20%28Alfie%20Kohn%29.mp3"Dr. Alfie Kohn noted in this fantastic presentation/a about the ideas in his book, a href="http://www.alfiekohn.org"#8220;The Schools Our Children Deserve,#8221;/a tougher standards and traditional classrooms are NOT educational reforms needed in our 21st century schools. We DO need to explore and share the educational/workforce connection which is ignored or poorly understood by most U.S. policymakers today, but we do not need to encourage constituents to grab pitchforks and torches under a banner of #8220;Back to Basics.#8221; As Kohn eloquently observes, it is ridiculous to call for a #8220;return#8221; to basics, because in most schools, learners NEVER LEFT the basics./p p / I tried to visually represent this #8220;gap#8221; between the workforce skills our students need and the skills emphasized in classrooms focused on high-stakes testing in the following graphic used in a href="http://www.speedofcreativity.org/2006/02/09/podcast32-cultivating-digital-liter acy-through-blogging-and-podcasting/"my February 2006 TCEA presentation, #8220;Cultivating Digital Literacy Through Blogging and Podcasting,#8221;/a which touched on these issues:/p pa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/wfryer/360563864/" title="Mutually Exclusive? by Wesley Fryer, on Flickr"img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/155/360563864_fe44636fd7.jpg" alt="Mutually Exclusive?" height="375" width="500" //a/p pa href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/wfryer/360563864/" title="Mutually Exclusive? by Wesley Fryer, on Flickr"img src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/155/360563864_fe44636fd7.jpg" alt="Mutually Exclusive?" height="375" width="500" //a/p pThe important question to ask, in this regard of course, is posed in the second graphic: How much overlap is there NOW in high-pressure, high-stakes classroom environments for the real world, digital literacy skills and higher order thinking skills required in the 21st century workforce? In many cases, the answer is #8220;very little#8221; or #8220;none at all.#8221;/p pHopefully a href="http://www.2mminutes.com/"the film #8220;Two Million Minutes#8221;/a will encourage a progressive, forward looking, and truly research-based approach to educational reform like that espoused by a href="http://www.alfiekohn.org"Kohn/a and others. As Kohn says, we need to be focused on EXCELLENCE and inquiry, problem solving and process, much more than our classrooms today largely driven by the demands of educational constituents focused on simplistic and often meaningless outcomes like subjective grades and norm-referenced test scores./p pOne of the most important, tangible things which teachers can and a href="http://remoteaccess.typepad.com/remote_access/2008/01/an-open-letter.html"ARE doing/a to advance this cause of progressive educational reform is SHOWING others what differentiated instruction and assessment LOOKS like and CAN look like. As a href="http://www.altruists.org/static/files/The%20Schools%20Our%20Children%20Deserve% 20%28Alfie%20Kohn%29.mp3"Kohn observes/a, many parents don#8217;t realize their children SHOULD have choices and alternatives to the fear-driven, worksheet-dominated educational experiences which were common for most students in the 20th century. a href="http://weblogg-ed.com"Will Richardson/a is not alone in lamenting the LACK of transparency in the classrooms of his own children in public schools: I want a href="http://www.mpsomaha.org/willow/radio/"Radio WillowWeb/a and the learning culture of Mabry Middle School under the leadership of a href="http://drtimtyson.com/"Dr. Tim Tyson/a for my own children NOW in their public schools too, not in 20 years when our local school board finally #8220;gets it.#8221; While I want to see this change take place NOW, it can#8217;t and won#8217;t. It can and will advance incrementally, however, and each time students and teachers use web 2.0 tools to more transparently demonstrate their understanding of concepts, collaborate safely with others, and explore the boundaries of content creation, communication, and digital learning, a step is taken in the right direction. Our abilities to amplify and share these examples via blogs and other digital communication tools are unprecedented in human history. Holt, Freire, and Dewey didn#8217;t have these tools. We do. That fact supports my abiding optimism for the cause of progressive educational reform in the 21st century./p pDoes #8220;Two Million Minutes#8221; merely offer a clarion call for #8220;change, change, educational change at any cost#8221; and call for #8220;more of the same#8221; when it comes to educational practices with bigger sticks and harsher punishments#8211; or does it offer a truly compelling vision for 21st century educational reform which transcends the limitations and problems of factory style, 19th century learning? I don#8217;t know. I won#8217;t know till I see the film./p pAfter I do, I#8217;ll be sure to check in here and let you know what I discover!/p pThanks to a href="http://www.siteblog.org/?p=150"Dr. Bonnie Bracey Sutton for sharing about the #8220;Two Million Minutes#8221; documentary on the SITE blog/a, and Bob Sprankle for adding Alfie Kohn#8217;s compelling book talk to his #8220;Bit by Bit#8221; podcast channel with a href="http://bobsprankle.com/bitbybit_wordpress/?p=327"his December 2007 post, #8220;What We All Want.#8221;/a/p pTechnorati Tags: a href="http://technorati.com/tag/education+school+schoolreform+reform+change+learning+ politics+twomillionminutes+site+bonniebraceysutton+bobsprankle" rel="tag"education school schoolreform reform change learning politics twomillionminutes site bonniebraceysutton bobsprankle/a/p script type="text/javascript" addthis_url = 'http%3A%2F%2Fwww.speedofcreativity.org%2F2008%2F01%2F28%2Ftwo-million-minutes-a-call -for-educational-change%2F'; addthis_title = 'Two+Million+Minutes%3A+A+call+for+educational+change'; addthis_pub = ''; /scriptscript type="text/javascript" src="http://s7.addthis.com/js/addthis_widget.php?v=12" /script

Eleven to Alfie, eleven to the Kid, and three draws left one round to decide the Super World Bowl Series Championship Cup of War. A crackle of excitment shot through the several dozen spectators gathered at the Angkor Wat Casino. Even the oversized plaster pseudo-Khmer statues seemed fixated on the action (if you were drunk enough, anyway).br /br /The Kid flipped a hundred-dollar chip onto the table. "That's how we do it Arkansassy style, big mouth. Your bet." But Alfie, well...since his big wipeout against Sammy Kwo at the Cloaca Room two weeks back, Alfie'd had a little bit of a cash-flow problem. There was no way he could see the Kid's bet - but there was also no way he was going to punk out now, not after everything he'd gone through to get here. With a fortifying sigh, he gingerly placed his Polaroid i639B 6.0 Megapixel Digital Camera on the table.br /br /If the rubes were excited before, this gambit spurred them into paroxysms of utter astonishment. Every last man jack of them knew the i639B, had heard tales of its 3x optical zoom and 2.4" LCD, treasured the legends of its self-timer and PictBridge capability. They knew it was worth far, far more than the Kid's hundred-dollar chip, maybe as much as 50% more. But the crafty Arkansan wasn't obliged to accept the bet. If he didn't, it was all over. The Kid would ride a river of champagne and silicone to ever-greater glories, while Alfie would probably be washing Sammy Kwo's car by this time next week.br /br /"I accept the bet." Not even the Pine Bluff Kid could resist the bewitching Polaroid i639B. The dealer moved slowly, the burden of the moment heavy on his shoulders. The whole room took a collective breath as he fingered the last two cards, the two thin slips of plasticized cardstock upon whose slim edges rested the destinies of two men.br /br /Then I had to go to the bathroom really bad, so I didn't see what happened next. 29. Podcast228: Pedagogic Crimes Against Students
  30. 12 Feb 2008 at 11:56am
    Listen
pAbraham Maslow#8217;s Hierarchy of Needs indicates the perception of a safe environment, along with basic physiological needs, are pre-requisites for the development of higher order needs eventually culminating in self-actualization. This podcast focuses on our ethical obligations as moral educators to speak out and take action when pedagogic crimes are taking place in our schools against students. The specific pedagogic crimes I address in this podcast include verbally threating elementary school children with the loss of their entire summer vacation if they don#8217;t work harder and score better on high stakes tests, and the departmentalization of students in first grade. Neither of these actions are supported by educational research as ways to enhance student achievement or promote the sort of school culture in which learners of any age can thrive. Both of these actions have been and are being taken in a Texas elementary school, whose identity I am not disclosing for reasons I explain in the podcast. These reprehensible actions are NOT taking place everywhere in all our schools, and I am not wanting to further erode public perceptions of teachers and our schools in general by sharing these stories and ideas. I do believe, however, that cultures of fear are more prevalent than ever in many of our public schools today because of NCLB and our predominant, destructive political culture emphasizing high stakes accountability. As moral human beings in our communities, we have obligations to speak out when children are being harmed both physically and verbally, even if those actions are being taken in the name of #8220;raising student achievement,#8221; #8220;improving test scores,#8221; or #8220;getting our kids ready for high school.#8221;br / span class="style18" /span/p h3/h3 pstrongShow Notes:/strong/p ol lia href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow's_hierarchy_of_needs"Maslow#8217;s hierarchy of needs on WikiPedia/a/li lia href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abu_Ghraib_prisoner_abuse"Abu Ghraib torture and prisoner abuse/a on WikiPedia/li lia href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enron"Enron article/a on WikiPedia/li lia href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whistleblower"Whistleblower article/a on WikiPedia/li lia href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html%3FASIN=1591581699%26tag=discoveringharry %26lcode=xm2%26cID=2025%26ccmID=165953%26location=/o/ASIN/1591581699%253FSubscription Id=02ZH6J1W0649DTNS6002"#8220;The Power of Reading, Second Edition: Insights from the Research#8221;/a by Stephen Krashen/li lia href="http://www.sdkrashen.com/"Website of Dr. Stephen Krashen/a/li lia href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html%3FASIN=0131195034%26tag=discoveringharry %26lcode=xm2%26cID=2025%26ccmID=165953%26location=/o/ASIN/0131195034%253FSubscription Id=02ZH6J1W0649DTNS6002"#8220;Classroom Instruction that Works: Research-Based Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement#8221;/a by Robert J.
