Then the Stephen King list made me give them another chance. I picked up the song emImpossible Germany/em somewhere and now its probably in my top 5 fave songs of the year. I've to it about 15 times in the past two days. /p pThe delicate notes as it opens and simple arrangement are reminiscent of a mellow Al quot;Year of the Catquot; Stewart song.nbsp; I also love how it gets quot;jamm-yquot; at the end, a few more minutes and it would've lost me but I could see groovin' out to this song as an encore at a summer concert, cold beer in hand. Wilco is s'posed to be quite good in concert./p pThe following lyric in particular, and the music behind it, make me think of a swingin' 70s couple listening (see the couple top left corner) to it over candlelight and sangria, toes wiggling in shag carpeting. Here's the lyric:/pblockquotepspan style="color: #990099;"emquot;This is what love is for, to be out of place, gorgeous and alone, face-to-face. No larger problems need to be erased, nothing more important than to know someone's listening.quot;/em/span/p/blockquote pYou don't hear straightforward quot;I want to love youquot; and be alone with you lyrics like that anymore./p pAnyway, here's more Wilco I picked up from everywhere, (too busy to cite sources today! will do it later people I stole from, sorry!)/p pa href="http://stopokaygo.typepad.com/web/files/03_impossible_germany.mp3"Wilco: emImpossible Germany/em.mp3/a* (LOVE!) /p pa href="http://stopokaygo.typepad.com/web/files/08_hate_it_here.mp3"Wilco: emHate It Here/em.mp3/a /p pa href="http://stopokaygo.typepad.com/web/files/sidewiththeseeds.mp3"Wilco: emSide With The Seeds/em.mp3/a/p pa href="http://stopokaygo.typepad.com/web/files/wilco_is_that_the_thanks_i_get_live_on_ conan.mp3"Wilco: emIs That The Thanks I Get (Live on Conan)/em.mp3/a /p pAnd as a bonus, I rarely like Christmas songs. Too sappy. Only two I can think of off the top of my head are Elvis Presley's Blue Christmas and this one: /p pa href="http://stopokaygo.typepad.com/web/files/56m606knu7.mp3"Ray Charles: Baby Its Cold Outside.mp3/a/p/div pa href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/StopOkayGo?a=RUGdYs"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/StopOkayGo?i=RUGdYs" border="0"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/StopOkayGo/~4/198082558" height="1" width="1"/

  29. President Bush Hates Your Phonetics
  30. 26 Sep 2007 at 2:07pm
pJust kidding. In an amusing post yesterday on iPassport/i, Blake Nolan noticed a draft of President Bush#8217;s speech to the UN contained some a href="http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/node/6408"phonetic guides to pronunciation/a:/p blockquotep* Kyrgyzstan [KEYR-geez-stan]br / * Mauritania [moor-EH-tain-ee-a]br / * Harare [hah-RAR-ray]br / * Mugabe [moo-GAH-bee]br / * Sarkozy [sar-KO-zee]br / * Caracas [kah-RAH-kus]/p/blockquote pOf course, while these phonetic guides didn#8217;t help him with #8220;a href="http://foreignpolicy.com/files/kerzigstan.mp3"kerzigstan/a,#8221; he did apparently trill the #8220;r#8221; in #8220;a href="http://foreignpolicy.com/files/perrrru.mp3"Perrru/a#8221; nicely (I won#8217;t touch the Aung San Suu Kyi partial gaffe, as that one is understandably difficult, so to speak)./p pThe really interesting part, though is how a href="http://blogs.usatoday.com/ondeadline/2007/09/white-house-ups.html"darkly defensive/a White House Press Secretary Dana Perino got when asked about it. President Bush is not a baby, and if he blows the names of countries the way he blows basic words like #8220;nookyoolar,#8221; I don#8217;t see where the offense comes in. Fatigue, maybe, at the constant focus on his disfluencies (though this is a trait he apparently shares with French President Nicolas Sarkozy), but offense is a bit much. /p div class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/registan?a=vGTnxshO"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/registan?i=vGTnxshO" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/registan?a=gQYZyDps"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/registan?i=gQYZyDps" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/registan?a=MAtK5jLy"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/registan?i=MAtK5jLy" border="0"/img/a /div

  39. CBS Radio Workshop #63
  40. 19 Nov 2007 at 6:11pm
Charlotts's Serape Broadcast April 14, 1957 24:18 Min - 5:56 Mb From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The CBS Radio Workshop Genre Anthology drama, Running time 30 min, Country United States, Language(s) English, Home station CBS Director(s) William N. Robson, Elliott Lewis, Tony Schwartz, Dee Engelbach, Jack Johnstone, Antony Ellis Producer(s) William N. Robson, William Froug Air dates January 27, 1956 – September 22, 1957 - No. of episodes 86, Audio format Monaural sound The CBS Radio Workshop was an experimental dramatic radio anthology series that aired on CBS from January 27, 1956, until September 22, 1957. Subtitled “radio’s distinguished series to man’s imagination,” it was a revival of the earlier Columbia Workshop, broadcast by CBS from 1936 to 1947, and it used some of the same writers and directors employed on the earlier series. The premiere broadcast was a two-part adaptation of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, introduced and narrated by Huxley. It took a unique approach to sound effects, as described in a review that week in Time (February 6, 1956): It took three radio sound men, a control-room engineer and five hours of hard work to create the sound that was heard for less than 30 seconds on the air. The sound consisted of a ticking metronome, tom-tom beats, bubbling water, air hose, cow moo, boing! (two types), oscillator, dripping water (two types) and three kinds of wine glasses clicking against each other. Judiciously blended and recorded on tape, the effect was still not quite right. Then the tape was played backward with a little echo added. That did it. The sound depicted the manufacturing of babies in the radio version of Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. [1] Music for the series was composed by Jerry Goldsmith, Amerigo Moreno, Ray Noble and Leith Stevens. Other writers adapted to the series included Robert A. Heinlein, Sinclair Lewis, H. L. Mencken, Edgar Allan Poe, Frederik Pohl, James Thurber and Thomas Wolfe.
