  5. Episode 059 - Bad Bears, Frisky Colts, and Session Ales with The Girls!
  6. 8 Feb 2007 at 1:05am
Today The Girls are coming to you live from the silent and cavernous bowels of Angelo Massinimo Stadium where Team Catania tries to figure out a way to pump up the missing crowd. Banished is more like it. After busting out the liver of a man in blue - or whatever color the cops wear in Italy, the government has stepped in, Ferragamo firmly placed, and prohibited fans from attending soccer matches in Italy until the stadiums can prove they know how to control the masses. So the teams will strike. And bedlam will ensue. Whole pages of history will be rewritten, you get the drill. Meanwhile, back on the shores of the USA, the Bears try and come to terms with the team's announcement that Rex Grossman will, in fact, be the starting quarterback next year. That was probably a bigger blow than losing the Super Bowl. The Girls are in agreement that Prince was a super fine choice, while Cirque de Soleil can stick it where the sun don't shine. Except if that means in a stadium in Florida during a rain storm. We don't need to see that again. It was certainly an interesting game for three quarters and worth a look back, while the commercials lacked in creativity yet again with the exception of Evil Mapasaurus. Other sports were in full force this week, despite what the world might think, so The Girls give them their due with a spin around the soon to heat up world of NASCAR, a coast to coast on the NHL, and a lay up or two in the world of the NBA, all with what could be the best session beer to have been discovered by the Fantoo Girls firmly in hand. In closing, this week's IT HAS TO BE SAID, warns men yet again that some with the XX chromosome are to be avoided at all costs. The trick is to be able to tell which is which. Hey, we're smart, but we're not miracle workers. So put away that pigskin, grab your checkered flag, and don't forget to order a King Cake - it's time to regroup and regather with The Girls!

  7. Explainer: Are Skinny Girls Unhealthy?
  8. 10 Jan 2007 at 10:49am
Are Skinny Girls Unhealthy? What if they're like that naturally? By Torie Bosch Later this week, the Council of Fashion Designers of America will issue guidelines for runway shows that encourage a healthier lifestyle for models. In New York, catwalkers won't be tested for a minimum body mass index, as they are in Madrid and Milan. Is it possible to have a very low BMI and still be healthy? Only if it's completely natural—and that's rare. Many people are predisposed to be thin, but if a model has a BMI of below 18—the threshold used in Madrid—she is almost certainly practicing unhealthy habits, such as restricting food intake or overexercising. Someone who's 5-foot-11, like most female models, would have to weigh less than 130 pounds to fall short of the threshold. To get to that point, even a natural waif would likely have to skip meals, exercise too much, or use diet aids. People who engage in these activities can face a myriad of health problems, often because of their low body-fat levels. BMI doesn't measure body fat directly; it looks only at the ratio of a person's height and weight. Doctors say direct fat measurements—via skinfold calipers, for example—tell you more about someone's health. (BMI is popular because it's so easy to calculate.) Women with less than 12 percent body fat can be at risk for serious health problems or starvation. Human bodies have evolved to be able to withstand starvation on occasion. In the absence of sufficient caloric intake, the body's metabolism slows down, and the liver, heart, and other organs may reduce their tissue reserves. For instance, the heart keeps backup capacity so that we can run very fast when we need to get away from a bad situation. The heart of someone who is starving, however, may not be able to hold extra muscle mass stockpiled for that sort of occasion. Because of these adapting body changes, people who are too thin can function normally much of the time. But a major blow to the system, like a bad bout of influenza or gastroenteritis, could throw off the tenuous balance and lead to cardiovascular problems and fainting. Other long-term potential complications of being too thin could include a diminished ability for the bowels to absorb nutrients, lost menstrual cycle, and decreased thyroid function. The standards set by Milan fashion-industry heavyweights require models to obtain a license issued by a panel of experts before being allowed to walk the runway. This panel is supposed to take models' ethnic and geographical background into consideration before issuing or denying someone a permit. Some research suggests that Asians, as well as members of some Australian Aboriginal tribes, may have a naturally lower BMI than Caucasians. However, the details on this are still unclear.

  9. Explainer: What will 24 years in a windowless basement do to your health?
  10. 30 Apr 2008 at 4:52pm
    Listen
explainer Life in an Austrian Dungeon What 24 years in a windowless basement will do to your health. By Juliet Lapidos Josef Fritzl, the Austrian man who imprisoned his daughter in a cellar for 24 years and fathered seven children with her, is facing prosecution for rape, abduction, incest, and possibly murder. One of the seven kids died (hence the possible murder charge), three were raised by their grandmother aboveground, and three others spent their entire lives in a windowless, 60-square-meter hellhole. Is living in a dungeon bad for your health? Yes, but not as bad as you might think. From a medical standpoint, there's one major problem with underground living: the absence of natural light. Lack of exposure to sunshine increases the risk of vitamin D deficiency, which causes rickets and other bone diseases including osteoporosis. Vitamin D malnutrition may also lead to chronic diseases such as high blood pressure. Unless you eat huge amounts of fish—cod liver oil every day for lunch, for example—it's difficult to obtain sufficient vitamin D from natural food sources alone. It's possible, however, to get the vitamin through dietary supplements. Another health hazard for the forcibly homebound is lack of exercise. Sixty square meters isn't much space for a cardiovascular workout. If the dungeon dwellers weren't getting their heart rates up regularly, then they're all at risk for heart disease and obesity. While fresh air isn't a health requirement per se, poor ventilation can lead to a host of medical problems. Humidity encourages the growth of mold, which can trigger allergies and asthma attacks. If one person gets sick, it's dangerous for others to breathe the same air. Of course, the subterranean family never had direct contact with the outside world, but they were exposed to bacteria via contact with Josef, so they weren't entirely cut off from diseases, airborne or otherwise. Scientific studies on the physical effects of long-term confinement in prison aren't especially pertinent here since prisoners generally have more space to roam around and more access to fresh air than the Fritzls did. But another famous Austrian kidnapping case might shed some light. Natascha Kampusch was abducted at the age of 10 in 1998 and held captive in a small, windowless cellar. After the first several months, she had access to the upstairs house and, occasionally, to the garden, but she spent nights in the basement. When she finally escaped in 2006, she was thin (just a little more than 100 pounds) and hadn't grown much (about 6 inches), but otherwise, she was in good health.

Some of her first memories were of the depression-era rural south. That experience had a lot to do with the way she felt about money, politics, and just about everything else. She drilled into my head that saving money was important, that debt was bad, and that you never knew what was around the corner. As I get older, I am constantly reminded of how much of her values I absorbed- even as I tried to ignore them. In turn, a lot of her values are being drilled into my kids' heads. I hope they are absorbing them- even as they seem to ignore them./p pMy dad died when I was 8 and my mom was 43. My sister was in college by then, so for most of my formative years it was just me and mom. We fought like cats and dogs at times, and we had great fun other times. She insisted that I do my best and accepted nothing less. It often made me mad, but it also made me who I am./p pMany of my best memories of my mom involve playing cards and board games. We played Hearts, Spades, a href="http://www.pagat.com/patience/spitemal.html"Spite and Malice/a (which we called Spike Malice), Risk, Rummikub, Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble. You name it. The family games we now sometimes have after dinner are another remnant of my mom./p pShe cooked the best chicken livers and made the best biscuits in the world. She was a great tennis player. She loved Bjorn Borg and disliked John McEnroe. She was a huge Wake Forest fan, and we would talk on the phone after every big game. Like the time Randolph Childress single handedly won the ACC Tournament./p pBut she loved her cigarettes./p pMom died of cancer 5 days before Cassidy (my oldest) was born. I wrote a a href="http://www.newsome.org/1999/01/5-days-in-april-day-1.html"short story/a about it. Part of the reason Cassidy and I are such soulmates is that she pulled me out of that darkness and healed me./p pAfter Cassidy was born, I went back home to clean out Mom's house- the house where I grew up. I wrote a href="http://www.newsome.org/MP3/MMHouse.mp3"this song/a on her back porch after the movers left./p pI don't think about mom every day anymore. I wish I did. But I'm thinking about her on this Mother's Day. I wish she could know her grandkids. I wish they could know her./p pMaybe they do a little. Because they know me./p p/p div class="wlWriterSmartContent" id="0767317B-992E-4b12-91E0-4F059A8CECA8:632aebd0-cec2-43ba-ae2f-709f270438c6" contenteditable="false" style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; display: inline;"Technorati tags: a href="http://technorati.com/tags/mothers%20day" rel="tag"mothers day/a/div div class="feedflare"a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/newsome?a=6HDz2MUf"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/newsome?i=6HDz2MUf" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/newsome?a=fN1QomSc"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/newsome?i=fN1QomSc" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/newsome?a=cA1qibIy"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/newsome?i=cA1qibIy" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/newsome?a=BB5KnAPF"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/newsome?i=BB5KnAPF" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/newsome?a=bdhJ2gwy"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/newsome?i=bdhJ2gwy" border="0"/img/a/div

  15. Want To Make Your Brand Shout Out From The Crowd?
  16. 27 Jan 2007 at 6:29pm
pI jumped into my car, reached for my seatbelt and looked up at the campervan parked in front of me. The message on the back appeared to be hand-written, like someone had just dipped their finger in a can of paint. It read: emI love every body. Yours is next./em Taken with their humour, I scanned the remaining area for more information about who this person was. The print scrawled across the back window read: /p pa href="http://www.wickedcampers.com/"www.wickedcampers.com/a. Sometime later I spotted another wicked looking camper. Instantly recognising their trademark style, and eager for more wicked wit, I searched for the slogan and wasn’t disappointed: emThe liver is evil. It must be punished./em/p pTargeting those on a backpacker’s budget, the Wicked Campers image is reminiscent of the old a href="http://www.speedace.info/volkswagen_combi_van.htm"VW Combi Vans/a. Each one is themed to give the van its own personality complete with a name derived from the hand-painted, colourful, quirky images adorning the vehicle. The wicked finishing touch: an original, irreverent and witty hand-written #8220;message#8221; on each van. This company has very cleverly tapped into the backpacker culture, and in doing so has skillfully created their own./p pBy opting for outrageous antics Wicked Campers have built their marketing eminto/em their brand identity. This is a great illustration that marketing is no longer what you do emto/em a brand emafter/em it’s built. To get mind space in today’s noisy marketplace, brands need to build marketing eminto their brand./embr / a id="more-658"/abr / Out of curiosity, I’ve since asked a number of people if they’ve seen the vans. Almost everyone I asked could recall having seen one. Now imagine if I had asked if they’d ever seen a (insert boring name of el cheapo rent-a-car company). Do you think they’d remember? Would you?/p pHere’s a few samples from customers featured in their #8220;Wicked Stories#8221; collection:/p blockquote class="postinfo2" p…We instantly became attached to both Bo Derek and Janice Joplin, the most colourful vans you could ever wish for! Having the opportunity to personalise the quotes on the back made them even more special! They truly were a home away from home, hosting many parties, games, feasts, crazy antics and some of the funniest moments of my life. I’m not sure if I’ll find anything funny again!/p p…As we picked up our camper and headed to our house through the busy centre of Brisbane to collect our luggage, we were really shocked that every second car was honking at us. We started to worry that something was wrong with the car and we decided to stop at a petrol station to check the tyres – everything seemed OK#8230;We arrived at the house and by the time we approached the car from the rear, we realized what was the reason for the blowing of horns – there was a great sign on the back asking, #8220;HONK IF YOU ARE NOT WEARING UNDERWEAR#8221;. We were laughing for almost 10 minutes, and then throughout the following 18 days every time we heard honking while being overtaken!/p p…It once again has #8220;Wicked#8221; painted over the front (which causes every kid we drive past to shout #8220;WICKED!#8221; at the top of their lungs to us)…/p pI cannot believe it! Before we even set off along the Great Ocean Road, we stop to collect our stuff from the hostel and there’s a guy taking a picture of the camper on his mobile…/p pWe picked up our Flintstones van in Melbourne and headed south along the Great Ocean Rd. We quickly discovered that having a Wicked Camper is a bit like being a celebrity as people (particularly the Japanese) would stop, stare and take photos of us and the van. We spent a wonderful first night camping by a beach with no-one else apart from Andy, me, the stars and a stack of VB! Could life possibly get anymore wonderful? Yes it could! The second night we had reached the 12 apostles and had decided to watch the sunset at this magnificent spectacle. We took a bottle of finest Australian sparkling wine and set up camp with a glorious sunset beginning. It was at this point that Andy got down on one knee and asked if I would like to be the future Mrs Linham. I could not picture a more perfect setting for us to get engaged (I did say yes by the way). After much embracing and kissing, and very little sunset watching, we headed back to our Wicked vans to spend our first night as the future Mr and Mrs Linham. The rest of the trip has been a bit of a blur, but who cares as we are so happy and are already planning the honeymoon…. Maybe a Wicked Camper Tour in NZ!/p/blockquote pWould you like wicked stories like that about your product? Or put another way…/p h3Want to Create a Sensation with Your Brand?/h3 pI do. Which is one of the reasons I named my game, emThe Meet Market/em. Another reason I gave my game such a controversial name is because it’s integral to an important part of my mission – turning negatives into positives in a fun way. But I’m also acutely aware that using a play on words of a derogatory term to create a culture that#8217;s the exact opposite is tricky./p pBut let’s face it, Outrageous Idea = Risky = Scary. And all this adds up to freaking out the status quo who will try to convince you that you’ve lost your marbles. It’s fair to say that I struck a teeny bit of opposition to the name of my choice (read: big understatement). The conversation usually went something like this:/p p#8220;You’re not going to call it emthat/em are you?#8221;br / #8220;Ah…yep.#8221;br / (insert groan and/or facial contortion) #8220;Oh no. Oh dear. Oh gosh. Oh-me-oh-my.#8221;/p pWhile most people are just trying to look out for you, be careful who you listen to because the status quo may not be your customers (at least not initially). A few of the people who objected to the name were marketing professionals and advisors of various descriptions. But in the end I followed my gut. As I suspected would happen *customers love it*. They love that it’s cheeky and funny. Recently a 53-year-old customer told me that when she came across a href="http://www.closeconnexion.com.au"my website/a and saw the name of the game she said to herself: emThat’s fantastic, I’ve just got to be a part of that./em/p pHaving a name that conjures up a rather unsavoury image, and wanting to create a totally opposite culture with my product and service, my presentation is critical. My image must convey #8220;class#8221; and #8220;quality#8221;, as well as playfulness and fun. Because of this, a lot of time and thought went into designing the look. It’s important that when people read the name they also see a playful, fun and ‘innocent’ image to counter the preconceived ‘unsavoury’ image. img src="http://www.closeconnexion.com.au/catalog/images/meet_logo.jpg" class="alignleft" /This approach is working because people get the joke instantly, and I get to witness this first-hand at the weekend markets. Most people break into a smile and feel compelled to say the name out loud. (A bit like the kids calling out #8220;WICKED!#8221;). They do this even mores so with the a href="http://www.closeconnexion.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=22amp;products_ id=31"Frequent Flirter/a merchandise – few can pass my stall without pointing, laughing and saying the catchy phrase (another play on words) out loud. It’s a stack of fun for me watching the various different reactions; their facial expressions never cease to entertain me. Often it’s a look of disbelief accompanied by hand-over-mouth and inevitable giggle. Very often it stops them in their tracks./p pHowever, a misguided #8220;stunt#8221; can stop them in their tracks for all the wrong reasons. Being cheeky, daring, politically incorrect, or over-the-top can bring you recognition and renown – and throngs of adoring customers. But an outrageous idea, especially when it’s done emto/em your product rather than being a empart of/em your product can also bring you undone./p h3Cheeky, Irreverent and Fun vs Offensive/h3 pThe lingerie brand Loveable got a taste of this recently when their new advertising campaign backfired. Former Miss Universe Jennifer Hawkins, a href="http://www.lovable.com.au/www/211/1001127/displayarticle/1358442.html"Loveable s new ambassador/a, was featured in bra and panties at a New Zealand airport. Yep, down she came!/p pWhat it boils down to is that being cheeky or outrageous with your branding and marketing can be a stroke of genius, IF it’s a logical and comfortable fit with your brand, product, service, or identity – AND if it’s not offensive. I’m curious about their reasoning for using that caption, because it seems obvious to me that posing an overtly sexual question is a blatant mis-match with a brand that Hawkins herself describes as #8220;cute, girly and fun#8221;./p pContrast this with an outrageously politically incorrect campaign that is now legendary in Australia – it’s a great example that even a very un-sexy product marketed in the right way can cause a sensation. All it takes is some creativity. While the initial uproar and opposition to this advertisement was intense, so was the support. The campaign, now in its third year, has become so popular that the face of it, former football star #8220;Slamming#8221; Sam Kekovich, along with Meat amp; Livestock Australia (MLA), now #8220;own#8221; the Australia Day slot with their #8220;address to the nation#8221;./p pLike many, I was stunned when I first saw this commercial in 2005; I wasn’t even sure what I was watching. The second time I nearly wet myself laughing. Intrigued? a href="http://www.mla.com.au/NR/rdonlyres/46EBC010-D6DE-4AFD-9AF3-3AE77BB74345/0/Sam_K ekovich_90_sec.wmv"Check it out here/a./p pDoes it surprise you that taking a tongue-in-cheek swipe at all and sundry including the #8220;soap-avoiding, pot-smoking, hippie vegetarians#8221; in order to #8220;defend#8221; the great Aussie tradition of eating lamb got so much attention? I#8217;ll bet that it doesn#8217;t. The emwhole country/em was talking about it! Check out some of the comments on a href="http://www.benjaminchristie.com/article/194/"Benjamin Christie’s blog/a following the 2006 campaign./p pWho would have thought that a product as un-sexy as lamb could cause this kind of sensation? And was the proof in the pudding? You betcha. In 2005 lamb serves per week increased by 1.2 million. Given the success of the campaign, they were back at it in a href="http://www.themainmeal.com.au/SamsSpeech.mpg"2006/a - and even more outrageous. In a href="http://www.votelamb.com.au/"2007/a Sam takes a good-natured swipe at our American and English friends!/p pPersonally, I’m a fan of the cheeky, the irreverent and the outrageous. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but most people respond well to it – when it’s done well – because it takes us away from the mundane, the same ol#8217; same ol#8217;. But it can be fine line between cheeky and offensive. The former can bring your brand fame and fortune, while the latter can knock you right on your you-know-what./p h3Guidelines to Using Sensationalism/h3 pIf the cheeky route appeals to you, here’s a few points to consider:/p ol liAsk yourself what your motive is. What’s your intention? What are you actually trying to say and achieve? What emotion are you trying to elicit from your potential customers? If your intent is one of goodwill AND it’s a logical and comfortable fit with your brand, product or service, chances are it will be a hit. If however there’s a hidden agenda, or the underlying tone of the message comes across as disrespectful (or preachy), it can backfire on you in a big way./li liDoes your idea really work with your product and brand? (i.e., being cheeky or outrageous can work for a lot of different products and services, but just ensure the method you choose really fits.)/li liDoes it feel right for you? If you’re uncomfortable, it probably won’t work./li liIs it merely an attention-getting stunt? One-off stunts can get a lot of attention, but they#8217;re usually very quick to fade. Think long-term./li liThink ahead: Weigh up the possible outcomes and long-term effect. What could go wrong, and how might you manage that?/li /ol pThat being said, I urge you to be edgy. Conformity is boring. Besides, it’s been done to death. Why not take a walk on the wild side and give your audience a little thrill./p pBe bold. Be bad. Be wicked even! You know it makes sense./p pP.S. Happy (belated) Australia Day to all our Aussie readers! /p a href="http://www.smallbusinessbranding.com/tag/marketing-stunts/" rel="tag"marketing stunts/a, a href="http://www.smallbusinessbranding.com/tag/sensationalism-in-marketing/" rel="tag"sensationalism in marketing/a, a href="http://www.smallbusinessbranding.com/tag/stand-out-from-the-crowd/" rel="tag"stand out from the crowd/a pa href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/smallbusinessbranding?a=XqiEYH"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/smallbusinessbranding?i=XqiEYH" border="0"/img/a/p div class="feedflare"a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/smallbusinessbranding?a=aT7clXoy"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/smallbusinessbranding?i=aT7clXoy" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/smallbusinessbranding?a=vidtKuVO"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/smallbusinessbranding?i=vidtKuVO" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/smallbusinessbranding?a=Y8xyaSU8"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/smallbusinessbranding?i=Y8xyaSU8" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/smallbusinessbranding?a=J203Poil"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/smallbusinessbranding?i=J203Poil" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/smallbusinessbranding?a=7Uylsn8g"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/smallbusinessbranding?i=7Uylsn8g" border="0"/img/a/div

pOn the August 29 broadcast of San Francisco radio station KSFO#39;s iThe Lee Rodgers amp; Melanie Morgan Program/i, co-host Lee Rodgers said: "Today, we are limiting ourselves greatly when it comes to taking part in this sentimental orgy about New Orleans on the second anniversary of [Hurricane] Katrina," adding: "They built a city in a swamp that#39;s below sea level. Get over it." Rodgers also asserted: "I for one -- now, I#39;m all in favor of helping needy people, but at what point do you say, #39;Hey, it#39;s time that you people got off your asses went to work and earned your own way#39;? " He went on to say: "Two years later, the people who have been freeloading for two years are whining because the gravy train is slowing down," and added: "At what point after a disaster and personal hardship are people expected to start taking care of themselves again? Is one hurricane supposed to be a permanent lifelong ticket on a bleeping gravy train? Come on!" /p pAlso on the show, after asserting, "I love New Orleans. ... I had some very happy times there," Rodgers asked: "Save New Orleans? For what?" adding, "Now they got the French Quarter up and running again. OK, fine. It#39;s a theme park, but that#39;s what it#39;s been for years anyway. The rest of it#39;s a sewer." Co-host Melanie Morgan responded by asserting: "[T]hey#39;re trying to fix the unfixable in the rest of the city and in the mean time every politician in the country is pandering, spending billions of dollars and putting it in what? A rat hole." Rodgers also suggested: "Keep the parts of New Orleans that are above sea level, or at least closer to sea level, as a theme park, which is what it#39;s been to many people anyway," adding, in reference to the French Quarter: "It#39;s a theme park with booze." br //p pBlogger "Spocko" noted the comments by Rodgers and Morgan in a September 15 a href="/rd?http://www.spockosbrain.com/2007/09/lee-rodgers-people-in-new-orleans-are" title="http://www.spockosbrain.com/2007/09/lee-rodgers-people-in-new-orleans-are"post /a. Spocko further noted that, on the August 30 edition of the show, Rodgers similarly asserted, in reference to the New Orleans refugees: "But two years later, for God#39;s sake, people, solve your own bleeping problems, we#39;re sick of hearing about you," adding: "Maybe those people down there ought to stop their sniveling and whining and watch an example of self-reliance right there in their own community." Later on that show, Rodgers asserted: "I don#39;t wanna hear anymore of this crap from people in Louisiana saying #39;Gimme, gimme, gimme.#39; Shut the hell up. Solve your own problems. It#39;s been two years, grow up."/p pAs iMedia Matters for America/i has documented, Rodgers and Morgan have a history of inflammatory comments: /p ulliIn an April 20 a href="/rd?http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=55298" title="http://mediamatters.org/rd?http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTIC LE_ID=55298"column/a for the conservative website WorldNetDaily, Morgan compared iMedia Matters for America/i to the Virginia Tech gunman who killed 32 people before shooting himself to death. Morgan a href="/items/200704200014" title="http://mediamatters.org/items/200704200014"wrote/a: "Like that mentally unbalanced and angry gunman at Virginia Tech, they#39;ll methodically march through the domiciles of the conservative movement, targeting the movement#39;s leaders for career elimination -- until and unless we stand up and fight back against their campaign of mayhem against conservative leaders and causes." Morgan also attacked iMedia Matters/i as "left-wing free speech Nazis." /li/ul ulliOn February 8, KSFO iMorning Show/i hosts Morgan, Rodgers, and Tom Benner, known on the show as Officer Vic, a href="/items/200702090005" title="http://mediamatters.org/items/200702090005"repeated and expanded upon/a the false accusation that billionaire philanthropist and progressive financier George Soros collaborated with the Nazis as a 14-year-old boy in Hungary. Rodgers claimed that Soros "apparently very cheerfully and willingly went to work for the Nazis," and Officer Vic added that "he just kind of complied willingly," while Morgan alleged -- without explanation -- that Soros did so "[i]n order to further his own career." /li/ul ulliOn the November 14, 2006, broadcast of iThe Lee Rodgers amp; Melanie Morgan Program/i, Morgan a href="/items/200611210011" title="http://mediamatters.org/items/200611210011"said/a, "We#39;ve got a bull#39;s-eye painted on her big, wide laughing eyes," referring to then-House Speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). On the November 20 broadcast of the show, Morgan again asserted that "it#39;s time to put the bull#39;s-eye" on Pelosi. /li/ul ulliAccording to the ia href="/rd?http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2006/06/29/MNGICJM9B21. I love New Orleans. In the days of my misspent youth, I left part of my liver in New Orleans. It#39;s a very -- I had some very happy times there. Love the music, love the whole ambiance. I once turned down a job in New Orleans because at that time I knew it would destroy me. There was just too much fun to be had. /p pMORGAN: Oh, well, what a level of self-awareness. /p pRODGERS: Yeah. Yeah. There was just too much fun. It#39;s a great place to visit. But it is time, I think, that we took an unsentimental view of the reality. Did you know that parts of New Orleans where some bthese silly people are trying to rebuild houses are 14 feet below sea level and sinking by another inch every year? And nothing has been done, really, that would prevent another Katrina. Nothing. Now, where in God#39;s name is the logic about trying to rebuild a city in a location like that?/b Let#39;s do the logical thing: blame the French, who built it there in the first place, just say it#39;s another piece of French stupidity, and move on. You know, keep the parts of New Orleans that are above sea level, or at least closer to sea level, as a theme park, which is really what it#39;s been to a lot of people for many years anyway. It#39;s a theme park with booze -- the French Quarter --/p pMORGAN: Yes./p pRODGERS: -- and get past that. bAnd I for one -- now, I#39;m all in favor of helping needy people, but at what point do you say, "Hey, it#39;s time you people got up off your asses, went to work, and earned your own way"?/b Two years later, here -- iDallas Morning News/i, some of the refugees from New Orleans were settled in Dallas, and the community had an outpouring of generosity and they were giving them all kinds of freebies, housing, so on and so forth./p pMORGAN: Yeah./p pRODGERS: bTwo years later, the people who have been freeloading for two years are whining because the gravy train is slowing down./b /p pMORGAN: Oh, no! While official figures are available, an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 evacuee households," people from New Orleans and vicinity, "still call North Texas home, and countless evacuees still need help paying for basic necessities such as rent and utilities."/p pbAh, at what point after a disaster and personal hardship are people expected to start taking care of themselves again? Is one hurricane supposed to be a permanent lifelong ticket on a bleeping gravy train? Come on!/b/p p[...]/p pRODGERS: bToday, we are limiting ourselves greatly when it comes to taking part in this sentimental orgy about New Orleans today on the second anniversary of Katrina./b /p pMORGAN: Yes. /p pRODGERS: bThey built a city in a swamp that#39;s below sea level. Get over it./b/p pMORGAN: Yes, and they are led by ridiculously liberal and incompetent and corrupt political power people. /p pRODGERS: Yeah, sure. And I mean -- and that#39;s the kind of people they elect. There is something to the old saying that people deserve the kind of government they get. Well, that#39;s the kind of people they elect in New Orleans and largely in the state of Louisiana. But it was two years ago today that Katrina came to visit New Orleans. Alex Stone, ABC News, covered the aftermath in the days following the storm, and he is back in New Orleans today as part of the media herd./p p[begin audio clip]/pblockquote pSTONE: The New Orleans police department is struggling to keep up. Headquarters is still in FEMA trailers. And there#39;s not enough money to buy bulletproof vests or new patrol cars. /p pUNIDENTIFIED MALE: We#39;re not pleased with the progress, nor are we satisfied of where we actually are. /p pSTONE: Sergeant Joe Narcee [ph] says he and his fellow officers are making do, but things are so bad that when the one bathroom inside the headquarters trailer is locked after hours, it means officers have to use the bathroom at a local gas station. Alex Stone, ABC News, New Orleans./p/blockquote p[end audio clip]/p pRODGERS: bTwo years later, and they can#39;t even get something like that fixed. Save New Orleans? For what?/b Now they got the French Quarter --/p pMORGAN: bFor another hurricane./b/p pRODGERS: -- now they got the French Quarter up and running again. OK, fine. It#39;s a theme park, but that#39;s what it#39;s been for years anyway. bThe rest of it#39;s a sewer./b/p pMORGAN: Well, the French Quarter wasn#39;t even that badly hit. I mean --/p pRODGERS: No, because it#39;s on higher ground./p pMORGAN: Exactly, so there wasn#39;t much of a problem there to begin with. bBut they#39;re trying to fix the unfixable in the rest of the city, and in the meantime, every politician in the country is pandering, spending billions of dollars, and putting it in what? A rat hole./b/p pRODGERS: bThese transplanted New Orleanians -- "Oh, it#39;s my home, I gotta go back." No, you don#39;t. People have moved all over the world throughout human history. You can do it, too. Get off your butt and go to work./b/p/blockquote

The first thing you’ll notice is the musical efficiency throughout the album. Kempner clearly understands that restraint can often unearth a stronger power within the song. Tracks like the brooding “Saving Grace” and “Blame Me” exemplify this ethic. The second thing you’ll notice is the masterful guitar work, not too surprising from a guy who has built a career with the instrument, backing Dion and Willie Nile in addition to his own bands. The thrashing guitar work on “The Secret Everybody Knows” and “Stolen Kisses” make this case resoundingly. Even the mid-tempo opener “Beyond the Pale” features some nice lead and rhythm guitar interplay and a tasty mid-song solo. Listen from start to finish and you’ll hear the heart of a soul-man in the body of a punkish rock and roller. This isn’t to say that Carll doesn’t have his own musical personality but rather that he is continuing to build upon a rich American music tradition. From start to finish his vocals ride high in the mix as much to showcase his twang-soaked timbre as his vivid storytelling. “I saw you leaning on a memory,” he sings wistfully on the remorseful “Beaumont.” Later he kicks it up a notch on the honky-tonkin’ “A Lover Like You.” Throw in a backwoods version of Tom Waits “I Don’t Wanna Grow Up” and an amped-up take on Canadian songwriter Scott Nolan’s “Bad Liver and a Broken Heart” and you’ve got another solid Carll outing./p pstrongTHE PLAYLIST:/strongbr / strongemLove You Again/em, a href="http://www.johnhiatt.com"John Hiatt/a/strong (from the New West Records release ema href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0013YTSDM?tag=twangville-20#038;creative=373489#038;c amp=211189#038;link_code=as3#038;creativeASIN=B0013YTSDM"Same Old Man/a/em)br / Hiatt is at his best when he focuses on simple, heartfelt subjects. He was deer-hunting in south Texas. He was having a good time. He had shot and field dressed a deer, so he had meat for his freezer. /p pThe only thing though was that his left hand had tangled with a mesquite thorn while he was in the south Texas brush. Not unusual for anyone who spends time in the country in the south Texas, but it may have been what started his harrowing journey to death's door and the removal of a great deal of flesh from his arm and hand. /p pYou see, within a period of several days, Ricky had to fight off a frequently deadly infection from what is often called flesh-eating bacteria. It is called necrotizing fasciitis and it is gruesome and hideous and just goes to remind us how little bugs can still kill us dead. I talked to Shannon Oliver, Ricky's wife, about the ordeal. /p pstrongEd Blackburn/strong: Would you tell our listeners what happened that Saturday, December 30th?/p pstrongShannon Oliver/strong: My husband was deer-hunting in south Texas. He had killed his deer and walking through the brush and everything. He got the thorn in his hand then he claimed the deer and everything seemed to be okay. He drove home Sunday. That is 7-8 hours drive home and by the time he got home, he had been sick with the cold and then his hands started swelling up Monday. So, we did the normal thing of the hot water and Epson salt and soaking it, and then by Monday night, he had a little mark come up on his hands about the size of a nickel. He thought that is where the thorn had poked him in his hand and I, you know, messing with it and everything and picking at it and stuff. By the next morning, he was now -- I thought he was in there sick to his stomach, so I went up and it was just coughing up blood and stuff. There again, I thought it was -- we all thought it was the flu, symptoms and stuff. So, by the time we walked in the doctor's office and sat down, the doctor mainly told us, quot; What took you so long to get here?quot; I kicked myself 100 times for not doing something earlier, but we just thought he had the flu./p pHe immediately told us to go to the emergency room and then from the Huntsville Emergency Room, they wanted to send him somewhere, Cornroe or College Station or something, somewhere where there was infectious disease doctor and a hand doctor. We wound up going to College Station Medical Center and when we got there within an hour, they head him into OR./p pstrongEd Blackburn/strong: And they knew what it was right off the bat by looking at it?/p pstrongShannon Oliver/strong: Pretty much. Apparently, the doctor has seen several patients with this before. They took him in at 10:00, 10:20 they started surgery, and a little after 1:00 a.m., the doctor walked out and says that he was taking a little break. He told me that Ricky was a man standing in the middle of the forest on fire. His kidneys, liver, lungs were all shutting down and my scare was they were fixing to amputate his arm./p pstrongEd Blackburn/strong: But what did the doctor say that it was?/p pstrongShannon Oliver/strong: The necrotizing fasciitis./p pstrongEd Blackburn/strong: And it moved pretty fast, didn't it?/p pstrongShannon Oliver/strong: Yes. When the doctor came out at 1:00, he said, quot;I cannot catch up with it. It is moving faster than I can catch it.quot; Apparently, what he was trying to do was to go around it, you know, cutting the flesh out on his arm and he just couldn't catch up. He said he could see it moving and there was like a green fluorescent line going through ... up his arm./p pstrongEd Blackburn/strong: That was an indicator of how this disease or, I guess it's a bacteria, isn't it?/p pstrongShannon Oliver/strong: It is bacteria. It's flesh-eating bacteria and to this day we do not know if it was the thorn, the deer, the deer and the thorn, or if they came from another small cut on his hand. We do not know if he brushed up against something. What they told us that we carry strep on you everyday and with his immune system down already, his body was in line./p pstrongEd Blackburn/strong: I see. Well, now, in your email as you related some of the events that occurred, I think you described that they actually peeled the flesh off his whole arm, is that right?/p pstrongShannon Oliver/strong: Yes, they took the skin, the flesh, but the muscle and the tendons wasn't there. He had some above his elbow all the way down to the last joint on his fingers./p pstrongEd Blackburn/strong: What did his hand look like that Monday night before you all made the decision to move in?/p pstrongShannon Oliver/strong: Across his knuckles, that one little spot are red that I had saw had moved all the way across his knuckles like a strip across there of redness and then patches, there were blisters, they are like the color of cabbage. I want to say like the shape of broccoli. It was just bigger, somewhat taller, they were reddish, purpley-looking./p pstrongEd Blackburn/strong: That sounds ugly./p pstrongShannon Oliver/strong:nbsp; He was not in a coma, but they had him so sedated and they had him on the top, antibiotics, double doses on his four antibiotics to get rid of these bacteria. Then Thursday, they did a shift change Thursday morning. The nurse looked at him and he had had a couple of red marks on his right hand and mainly they had trouble getting the IV in and stuff Tuesday night because I guess from his body shutting down and stuff. They couldn't get to the vein and everything. So, three hours later when she looked to check his IV again, a blister came up again on his right hand, on his wrist. She kindly got me and she said, quot;I've already told the doctor. This is a concern, quot; and I said, quot; That's it. It's the same thing.quot; The doctor came in and he start off about not jump to conclusions and when he popped it open, he said, quot;Call OR, we're going back.quot; He said, quot;Let's go ASAP.quot;/p pstrongEd Blackburn/strong: And so they worked on his hand a little bit?/p pstrongShannon Oliver/strong: They cut a piece out of his wrist and one on the side and some other places to make sure that they weren't missing it, but he came back and said there was not anything in the right hand, but if you would've saw the first hand to start with and then saw the right hand, there was no way I believed him standing there telling me that. He had this very concerned look on his face, the doctor did./p pstrongEd Blackburn/strong: I see, but he did his work and then you all moved down to Galveston, right?/p pstrongShannon Oliver/strong: Yes, and Friday morning they were talking about getting the ventilator off and everything and then all of a sudden, we're going to Galveston. So, we moved down there to the Burn Center and then Saturday morning, they took the ventilator out and he was starting to come to and everything. /p pa onclick="window.open(this.href, '_blank', 'width=300,height=300,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=n o,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false" href="http://texanareview.typepad.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/day2_3 00x300_1.jpg"img title="Day2_300x300_1" height="100" alt="Day2_300x300_1" src="http://texanareview.typepad.com/posts/images/day2_300x300_1.jpg" width="100" border="0" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px" //a At surgery, it was probably Wednesday or Thursday, they put a big sponge glove on him, on his arm and his hand, and if it had any infection or anything like that, anything, it would suck it out of it, the sponge, the vacuum gloves. When he woke up, he had that glove still on Saturday morning when they took the tube out when he was coming to and felt at that time, he thought he had lost his arm or his hand or something./p pstrongEd Blackburn/strong: Didn't you say that he kind of got his bearings again, he understood what was going on?/p pstrongShannon Oliver/strong: Yes, he did. He did. Then they took the sponge glove off and everything and then they tried to do, a couple of days later they tried to do a surgery to skin graft and when they got in there, he had a slimey and a little brownish look to his arm. /p pa onclick="window.open(this.href, '_blank', 'width=500,height=500,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=n o,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false" href="http://texanareview.typepad.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/1st_gr aft_cadaver_skin.jpg"img title="1st_graft_cadaver_skin" height="100" alt="1st_graft_cadaver_skin" src="http://texanareview.typepad.com/posts/images/1st_graft_cadaver_skin.jpg" width="100" border="0" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px" //a He was afraid to use his own [Ricky's] skin since it was going to take so much so they used cadavers' skin. We wore it for four days. They took it off again and it looked good, so the next day they did a skin graft from his legs, from his thighs, and they covered his whole arm in his hand and then four days later, we got to look at it and it looked good and then we had the pancreatitis problem./p pstrongEd Blackburn/strong: Was the diagnosis of the pancreatitis a result of the other injuries to his body?/p pstrongShannon Oliver/strong: I think so and all of the information that I kind of researched on the computer. It said from trauma infection and antibiotics can cause the pancreatitis. They treat it there for a couple of days, don't let you eat or anything, trying to get it to come down and finally said, quot;Okay, you can eat, quot; so they gave him like two pieces of toasts and a little bit of scrambled eggs and then it was not just 600, but they still let us go home but we have been monitoring it at home./p pstronga onclick="window.open(this.href, '_blank', 'width=500,height=500,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=n o,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false" href="http://texanareview.typepad.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/final_ graft.jpg"img title="Final_graft" height="100" alt="Final_graft" src="http://texanareview.typepad.com/posts/images/final_graft.jpg" width="100" border="0" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px" //a Ed Blackburn/strong: So, you've been home and he is resting and recuperating as we speak?/p pstrongShannon Oliver/strong: Yes, he is./p pstrongEd Blackburn/strong: I see. Well, you all certainly been through a bad, bad time and Ricky on his own and I guess your family and your close friends have also been through a tough time./p pstrongShannon Oliver/strong: Yes, sir./p pstrongEd Blackburn/strong: Well, I guess it's kind of a warning to others who spend time outdoors and hunting and fishing and I know for a fact myself, there had been times I've scraped my hand or my elbow or been stuck with a mesquite thorn and I didn't give it a second thought./p pstrongShannon Oliver/strong: Nope, not at all. The guys tell me, quot;We do it all the time, quot; you know? But his body was just I guess because his immune system was down./p pstrongEd Blackburn/strong: Well, that sounds like a very, very dangerous disease and sounds as well that you all are very lucky and all the prayers and good wishes from friends were helpful./p pstrongShannon Oliver/strong: Yes, sir. I believe that prayer is what got us through this./p pstrongEd Blackburn/strong: Shannon, thank you so very much for your time and once again, sincerely as I can say it, even though I'm a stranger, I wish Ricky a speedy recovery./p pstrongShannon Oliver/strong: Well, thank you so much. Bye-bye./p pstrongEd Blackburn:nbsp; nbsp;nbsp; /strongNecrotizing fasciitis is an ugly infection. It’s most commonly caused by what’s known as a Group A streptococcus germ …like the germ that causes strep throat. The Strep, as it’s often called is all around us …everyday of our lives. Most of us have a resistence to the bug, but it’s been making headway. /p pWhat happens with necrotizing fasciitis is that the germ turns INVASIVE …which means that it invades body tissues. It has a close cousin … the more popularly-known toxic shock syndrome./p pAlthough people call it the flesh-eating bacteria …it’s really not. What happens is …that once it invades body tissue, skin and muscles are destroyed by the toxins that the bacteria release. The toxins cause the over-production of cytokines that in turn over-stimulate macrophages. It’s the microphages that do the damage./p pA Necrotizing fasciitis infection starts out with flu-like symptoms. Sometimes it can start out at the site of some kind of trauma …like surgical incisions. Unlike the flu, though, symptoms become worse rather than better./p pAs the disease progresses, tissues become swollen and the skin distended. Skin color changes radically becoming violet or purple. Most of the time blisters form …some of them large and angry-looking. What’s happening is that subcutaneous tissues are dying …rapidly. Without treatment, the infection is almost 100 percent fatal./p pMedical care is a necessity with this bug …not an option./p pTreatment usually includes massive doses of antibiotics. Also, depending on how soon the diagnosis is made, surgical exploration is used and infected tissue is removed. In some cases amputation of an infected limb is the only way to the life of a stricken individual./p pAlthough first described medically in 1848, the disease didn’t make itself known to the general population until the 1990s when it got a lot of press./p pAlthough we know that the Group A Streptococcus germ is the primary culprit in this disease, it is still relatively unknown how it turns invasive./p pIt’s not known how many cases of this disease occur in Texas because it’s not a disease that’s required to be reported to those official agencies that monitor infectious diseases …like the Texas Department of Health Services. /p pFor more information, check out the links listed above./p div class="feedflare"a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/TheTexanaReview-Podcasts?a=zF9SFk3l"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/TheTexanaReview-Podcasts?i=zF9SFk3l" border="0"/img/a/divimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TheTexanaReview-Podcasts/~4/80514591"/
