An Analysis Of Directory Submissions
7 May 2007 at 8:50am
Title: An Analysis Of Directory Submissions, Category: SEO, Article: amp;lt;bamp;gt;Objectives of Directory Submissionamp;lt;/bamp;gt; Webmasters submit their sites to directories with three main objectives: amp;lt;ulamp;gt; amp;lt;liamp;gt;Get permanent one-way links to their sites,amp;lt;/liamp;gt; amp;lt;liamp;gt;Get links from high-PR sources andamp;lt;/liamp;gt; amp;lt;liamp;gt;Get interested visitors looking for the kind of info their site provides.amp;lt;/liamp;gt; amp;lt;/ulamp;gt; Let us look at the significance and practicalities of these objectives. amp;lt;bamp;gt;One-way Links from Directoriesamp;lt;/bamp;gt; The whole thing started with Google. Webmasters are eager to get top positions in Google search results because that brings them highest traffic. So they began to seek out things that amp;quot;pleaseamp;quot; Google. And found the value of links. Google considers a link from Site A to Site B as a vote in favor or Site B, indicating that Site B contains good content. And it would also seem that if Site B includes a return-link to Site A, the weight of the original vote goes down. It is believed widely that Google looks unfavorably on reciprocal links. One-way links could come automatically if your site has super-value content. If your site contains info that adds value to other sites (or is exceptionally cool), the latter might insert links pointing to your site. However, this is a tall order that few webmasters could hope to execute. The major remaining alternatives for getting one-ways links are two. amp;lt;ulamp;gt; amp;lt;liamp;gt;Write articles with an author byline that includes a link to your site, oramp;lt;/liamp;gt; amp;lt;liamp;gt;Get your site listed in a directory.amp;lt;/liamp;gt; amp;lt;/ulamp;gt; span class="KeyWordStyle"Writing/span articles was not easy. Nor could everyone write good articles. So most webmasters went after directories. Suddenly, a new business came into existence, the business of publishing directories. However, many of these new directories were shoddy works. Quite a few were just link farms for exchanging links among themselves, irrespective of the relevance of such links. Google began to penalize listings in such directories. In fact, it had a favorite directory, DMOZ, a listing in which carried high weight in Googleamp;amp;#8217;s ranking algorithm. Soon, webmasters began to flock to DMOZ. DMOZ being a directory compiled by unpaid volunteers, there was soon a serious shortage of editors to review the innumerable submissions. DMOZ has now become notorious for the delay in reviewing sites. Years could pass before your site is reviewed if ever. Worse, DMOZ has also become a very corruption-prone setup. Webmasters were willing to do anything to get into DMOZ. DMOZ decision-makers for one reason or another does not seem to welcome new editors who could have reduced the workload. Editors have no obligation to review sites in the order of submission. So, if you could influence a DMOZ editor, you could get your site reviewed quicker. It would be a surprise if many editors and webmasters did not exploit this situation to their advantage. And reports do indicate that malpractices are prevalent in DMOZ. So what do you do in such a situation? You search out directories with good Page Ranks. That brings us to the second objective of directory submission. amp;lt;bamp;gt;Get Links from High-PR Directoriesamp;lt;/bamp;gt; We mentioned earlier that Google considers a link from Site A to Site B as indicative of Site Bamp;amp;#8217;s value. However, not all links are equal in weight. A link from a high-PR site (a site with a high Google Page Rank) carries more weight. If a directory has high PR, it would mean that Google has assessed that directory and found it a worthy source of info. A link to your site from such a directory could not but carry some weight. If the link is from a highly relevant category (considering your siteamp;amp;#8217;s topic) the weight would be even more. amp;lt;bamp;gt;Get Targeted Traffic from Directoriesamp;lt;/bamp;gt; Some directories, like the Yahoo directory, are quite popular and used by Web surfers to find information they seek. A listing in such directories could bring many visitors and that too visitors specifically interested in the topic of your site. A Yahoo listing could bring both Google ranking improvement as well as traffic. However, a Yahoo listing does not come cheap. They charge $300 just to review your site, with no guarantee of inclusion. And if your site is accepted, you have to pay $300 annually to keep it there. In addition to Yahoo, there are specialized directories like Business.com that could bring targeted traffic to your site. Find out directories that specialize in your niche and assess their popularity. You might find at least one or two excellent sources of traffic. Good Directories Do Not Accept All Submissions If a directory accepted all sites that were submitted, it would soon begin to include many junk sites. As a result, it would cease to be a good source of worthwhile info. And Google might withdraw any PR it has been assigned. So, at least for remaining in the good books of Google, most directories have some criteria for including sites in their index. This is particularly true of specialized directories restricted to niche themes. Unless you meet the criteria for inclusion, your site could be rejected. This could happen even if you had paid money for a quicker review of your site. So what are the typical criteria? The first one is that your site must contain something of value to Web surfers. These surfers are mainly seeking information or entertainment. So directories look to see whether your site offers some value in these forms. Secondly, directories prefer sites with amp;quot;substantialamp;quot; content. They prefer a site with 20 or more pages of valuable content to one with just one page, even if that page has value. There could also be restrictions on the themes amp;amp;#8211; no adult sites, no hate content, no copyright violations and so on. Do take time to understand the criteria and ensure that your site meets these. And Finally, Go for Manual Directory Submission Another key issue is the mode of submission. As elaborated in another article on manual directory submission, directories have come to hate automated submissions that dump huge volumes of useless junk before their editors. Manual submission of your site by hand has a much higher chance of being reviewed and accepted., Form more information about SEO articles visit articler.com br/ br/

I point out that none of them seem to care about SQL, to which Charles says, #8220;yeah, well, SQL sucks#8221; and then goes on to tell us a handful of use cases where SQL doesn#8217;t work so well for him./p pIn talking about non-relational database models, Charles raises the interesting point that whatever they use, he needs to be able to do some #8220;business intelligence#8221; with the data: reporting, stats, and other data harvesting./p h2ACPR, CD-ROMs, and XML/h2 pWe then jump into a discussion of a href="http://www.drunkandretired.com/2008/01/12/aliens-vs-predator-requiem-review/"Al ien vs. Predator Requiem/a and sci-fi movies. Charles mentions the iBladerunner/i Game FAQ (a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20011020072110/coteindustries.com/nudesleeper/br/"se e here/a, thanks to a href="http://www.archive.org/web/web.php"the Internet Archive/a). After reminiscing about games on CD-ROMs, we bog down into a href="http://www.drunkandretired.com/fx/"some FundsXpress memories/a, namely, #8220;XML on CD-ROM#8221; which was apparently some FundsXpress hoopla./p h2GameOnLeagues Update/h2 pCharles and I then do some out-louding thinking about getting more partners and overall #8220;biz-dev#8221; for a href="http://www.gameonleagues.com/"GameOnLeagues!/a. The lists includes the gaming trade press, game stores, other people who run tournaments, and merchandising./p h2JavaOne and Scala/h2 pIn my yearly attempt to get Charles to go to JavaOne (still no word on our #8220;Live recording of DrunkAndRetired.com#8221; BoF submission), I mention that I#8217;ll probably be going to an upcoming a href="http://www.scala-lang.org/"Scala/a conference (which I completely got the dates wrong for, a href="http://groups.google.com/group/liftweb/browse_frm/thread/921afa454af054ba"it#82 17;s in May, not Feb./a!) and mention a href="http://www.javaposse.com/index.php?post_id=295209"the recent Scala coverage in the Java Posse/a./p h2Miller and Barking/h2 pAfter discussing Silva#8217;s mother and Charles#8217; like for Miller High Life, I ask Charles if he knows about dog barking: namely, if it means they#8217;re stressed out, or if they#8217;re having fun./p p p class="tags technoratiTags"Tags: a href="http://www.technorati.com/tag/gameonleagues" rel="tag"gameonleagues/a./p p/p p class="akst_link"a href="http://www.drunkandretired.com/?p=2860amp;akst_action=share-this" title="E-mail this, post to del.icio.us, etc." id="akst_link_2860" class="akst_share_link"Share This/a /pdiv class="feedflare" a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/cote?a=WqlKl1D"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/cote?i=WqlKl1D" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/cote?a=NnZI8zD"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/cote?i=NnZI8zD" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/cote?a=coeIdYD"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/cote?i=coeIdYD" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/cote?a=cRAbQID"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/cote?i=cRAbQID" border="0"/img/a /div

WSJ profile of social media services and powerusers
10 Feb 2007 at 8:35pm
pToday#8217;s Weekend edition of the Wall Street Journal offers what has to be the highest-profile coverage to date of the power of bookmarking services#8217; power users and the influence they have on consumers. These a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB117106531769704150.html?mod=home_we_banner_left "#8220;Wizards of Buzz#8221;/a include one 17-year-old high school student now being paid $1k per month by Netscape to do what he was doing for free on Digg. In includes profiles of power users on Newsvine, Reddit, Digg, Del.icio.us, StumbleUpon, and Netscape, among others, and also provides a comprehensive overview of each of those services./p p[Full disclosure: My employer represents StumbleUpon, but I do not work on their business, nor have I ever met one of their executives. To tell you the truth, I probably should use their service - but I don#8217;t.]/p pAuthors Jamin Warren and John Jurgensen provide a good layman#8217;s overview of the payola schemes that some (including the PR industry) have tried to employ to gain influence with these services and their users. The WSJ identified these users by analyzing over 25,000 submissions to these sites, using software from Dapper - I#8217;m previously unfamiliar with Dapper but will have to check them out./p pI#8217;ve struggled to explain the power of social bookmarking sites to friends and colleagues in the past because I couldn#8217;t steer them to any one resource. I agree with a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/02/10/digg-rock-stars/"Mike Arrington/a that those unfamiliar #8220;may be left somewhat confused by the whole crazy ecosystem#8221; after reading the article, but I think he#8217;s mistaken about the rest of us not learning anything we didn#8217;t already know. For me, putting faces and backstories to Digg, etc. user names put a human face on this trend./p pI#8217;m also plannning on steering people to the a href="http://podcast.mktw.net/wsj/audio/20070209/pod-wsjwknd/pod-wsjwknd.mp3"accompan ying WSJ podcast/a./p pSpeaking of bookmarking services#8230;No Tags /p

Today we talk with him live at Borders in Fairlawn Ohio. 9 Attitudes and Behaviours of a Successful Person 1. Selfishness - A positive life affirming approach. It#8217;s a loving thing to say no if you know you#8217;re not going to do something. You are not wasting someone#8217;s time. 2. Ownership - Take responsibility of where you are. While you can#8217;t choose what happens to you, you can create how you react to it. 3. Focus on Results - Successful people measure everything. By measuring you know what works. 4. People - How well lead, motivate, manage, nbsp;influence, and work withnbsp;others to purchase our products. 5. Focus -nbsp; Ask these Two Questions: Is what you#8217;re doing getting you closer to your goal, and it its no ask, quot; Why am I doing this?quot; 6. Persistence - Any behavior is going to be harder before it gets easier. Those that are persistent will get better. The greatest success is just before the biggest failure. Success that is handed to us isn#8217;t appreciated and doesn#8217;t stay.nbsp; 7. Discipline - When you measure your results and get the desired result, it#8217;s about turning this into a habit. It#8217;s about creating measurable, repeatable, and predictable outcomes. 8. Ideas - Creative people may have two many ideas. This can leads into too many items. The idea is to go deeper into the ideas you have instead of being shallow in a lot of ideas/projects. 9. Action - Success means to take action. People associate money, cars, with success. Those are the outcomes of being successful. You can only be successful by taking action. If you want to achieve a top 20 position you have to compete against spam content sites, black hat SEO sites, made for Adsense sites and powerful websites created by the most skilled web developers./FONT/P PFONT face=Arial size=2The good news is that are not so many websites of genuine quality out there, so webmasters who really focus on usability, valuable content, improving user experience and so on, do have a chance to reach the top positions. However, it is not enough to create the perfect website. The job is done when the website is known and recognized, when people come back, mesmerized by the information and design, in one word, quality. That’s also the moment when a website starts paying back for itself./FONT/P PFONT face=Arial size=2Webmasters and online entrepreneurs employ many tools to make a website known. From the simple directory and search engines submissions to complex advertising means, pay per click, banner exchange and ads, nothing escapes the trial. A less popular method is submitting websites for web awards. While many web awards are not really meaningful, there are a few that can mean a lot for the award wining website./FONT/P PFONT face=Arial size=2If you have a website and you are serious about doing business online, applying for web awards couldn’t hurt. Generally, awards show a commitment for excellence and quality, exactly what web users are looking for. The psychological impact is great. A web award is not just a pretty picture on your website, but a statement. It underlines values and encourages visitors to trust your company and make a purchase./FONT/P PFONT face=Arial size=2For example, a Webby award-wining site is actually recognized for excellence in Web design, creativity, usability and functionality. A World Wide Web Award serves the same purpose. Both these awards are prestigious and very difficult to win. They are significant because experienced web developers who make every effort to create compelling and innovative websites, for a better Internet, choose the winners. To have any of the two can bring important benefits to your website, including increase of traffic, media coverage (both online and offline), a boost of popularity and, as already underlined, enhanced public credibility./FONT/P PFONT face=Arial size=2Usually to qualify for a web award, a website needs to be developed according to the W3C Standards, to have original, quality content, to be spam and scam free, family and children friendly – eventually apply for a free ICRA label, to respect copyright laws and to promote moral and universal values. If you apply for a web award you have to make sure all your links are fully functional – that means no coming soon or under construction pages, no broken links, and no other technical difficulties (dead graphics and pictures, lack of proper alt attributes, heavy flash, etc)./FONT/P PFONT face=Arial size=2Winning a web award could bring you recognition offline too. Just ad the award on your brochures, fliers and other promotional materials to let people know that your company strives for excellence in everything it does./FONT/P DIV class=sig PFONT face=Arial size=2Scott Lindsay is a web developer and entrepreneur. What do you Squidoo?

h3emSquidoo is the world#8217;s most popular site for building free, single pages about your passions./em/h3 pemHighlight books, blogs, vids, online shops, or just spread the word about stuff you love. Bonus: you raise money (for you or charity) at the same time. It#8217;s fast, free, and supereasy./em/p pSquidoo is a network of user created emlenses/em or single pages that highlight one person#8217;s point of view, recommendations, or expertise. Lenses can be about anything, such as ideas, people or places, hobbies and sports, pets or products, philosophy, and politics. Lenses aren#8217;t created to hold content, but rather they are created to recommend and point to content elsewhere on the web./p pSo, maybe by now you#8217;ve heard of Squidoo and maybe you even have a lens or two. Today I interviewed a man that has over 300 lenses and expects to be earning about $2000 per month in passive revenue by year end./p pJoe Dillon, also known as, #8220;Captain Squid#8221; is a Giant Squid on Squidoo. This means he is recognized as one of the best lensmasters around. Joe was on #8220;The Small Business Guru amp; Gadget Guy#8221; Podcast today, as our guest and expert on Squidoo./p pimg border="5" vspace="5" align="left" width="162" src="http://www.captainsquid.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/giant_squid.jpg" hspace="5" alt="Giant Squid" height="143" /lt;side notegt;A Giant Squid, by the way, as the story goes is a lensmaster that has published 100 quality lenses. Geez, these guys must have a lot of time on their hands or there must be a financial strategy to all this lens making./p pToday Captain Squid - uh, Joe, gave us the basics on Squidoo. You can download the show a target="_blank" href="http://recordings.talkshoe.com/TC-14618/TS-95972.mp3?dl=1" title="The Small Business Guru amp; Gadget Guy interview Captain Squid"here/a. The basics are free. You can find video tutuorials in the a target="_blank" href="http://www.captainsquid.com/learn/lb101" title="Lensbuilding 101: Captain Squid's Video Tutorials"Captain#8217;s Training section/a./p pIt#8217;s a facinatingly interactive alternative to Article Marketing - well maybe not an alternative because as Joe pointed out on the call it#8217;s actually works the same as article marketing in creating a viral spread of your links but it#8217;s more because it#8217;s so interactive./p pOh, and there are angel Squids that give blessings - blessings boost lens ranking. Why is that important? The more popular the ranking the better the payout is from the revenue share. Oh, didn#8217;t I tell you? Not only is it free to create a lens, and create as many as your heart desires, but Squid Inc shares the revenue from Google Adsense, Amazon, Ebay and the like./p pI must confess, I too have become addicted to Squidoo. Journalists should cultivate a growth mindset
19 Nov 2007 at 12:28pm
pemspan class="body"In a time of drastic change it is the learners who inherit the future. The learned usually find themselves beautifully equipped to live in a world that no longer exists./span /emem- Eric Hoffer /em/p pThere#8217;s been a bit of chatter the past couple of weeks about a href="http://ia351405.us.archive.org/0/items/BryanMurleyRobCurley-CMAConventionkeynot e/curley1.mp3"a speech that Rob Curley gave recently/a. Curley talks about the difference between mindset and skill set. He also notes how frequently some of us run across recent j-school grads who are close minded about online./p pRather than pick on any one person#8217;s response to these comments, I would rather fashion a general clarification./p pTo me, mindset is one of the most critical issues facing journalism today./p pIn his speech, Curley makes it clear what he means by skill set, but I think some people are still conflating mindset and skill set. Just because you know Flash, or can operate a video camera or hack a little PHP doesn#8217;t mean, per se, that you have the right mind set./p pA while back, a href="http://blog.guykawasaki.com/2007/03/the_effort_effe.html" target="_blank"Guy Kawasaki/a pointed me to this a href="http://www.stanfordalumni.org/news/magazine/2007/marapr/features/dweck.html" target="_blank"great article about mindset/a./p pEssentially, there are two kinds of mindsets. There is the fixed mindset and the growth mindset./p pThe fixed mindset might say something like, #8220;I got into this business to be a writer, not a videographer.#8221; The growth mindset might say, #8220;Video? Cool! Let me give it a try.#8221;/p pOr, the fixed mindset doesn#8217;t believe newspapers are under an existential threat #8212; rather it#8217;s corporate greed, or getting away from #8220;core values#8221; that is causing industry woes, or some other force that can only be resisted by #8220;keep doing what we#8217;re doing.#8221; The fixed mindset isn#8217;t even willing to entertain the idea that maybe we must make some radical alterations to how we define journalism./p pThe fixed mindset says, #8220;there aren#8217;t enough hours in the day for me to put out this print paper and update online.#8221; The growth mindset says, #8220;what can I do differently to work more efficiently so I can focus on the web?#8221;/p pThe fixed mindset hates conversational media, especially blogs, and wonders why we#8217;re wasting time on video./p pA growth mindset is always willing to try new things and admit that maybe the way people interact with media now is fundamentally different./p pBut there is a deeper level of mindset that is related, but different./p pOften, those of us who talk about people who #8220;get it,#8221; think we #8220;get it#8221; and expect people to understand what we mean by #8220;get it.#8221;/p pSure, having a growth mindset is a prerequisite to getting it, but that only takes you so far./p pGetting it means that not only do you understand that the way people interact with media is now fundamentally different; it also means you understand how people use media now./p pIf you get it, you see the trends./p ul liYou understand that blogging is the most successful online publishing tool because blogs are immediate, conversational and egalitarian./li liYou understand that online video is successful because it is immediate, conversational and egalitarian./li liYou understand that for younger people, being able to make connections with friends and family is a href="http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA6494920.html?industryid=47286" target="_blank"essential to how they view the world/a./li liYou understand that technology is changing fast, and all the growth patterns point toward a media world that is even more distributed and conversational than what we have today./li /ul pFurthermore,/p ul liYou have used conversational media and have come to see it as a better way to report and share news, because it is more meaningful to the people who participate (to the fixed mindset, this will seem preposterous)./li liYou participate yourself #8212; you probably have a blog, but you certainly read several blogs; you#8217;ve shot and uploaded some personal video; you#8217;re on MySpace or Facebook (or at least LinkedIn);/li liYou have several online-only friends (you#8217;ve never met in person);/li liYou#8217;ve experienced watching a news story grow through the participation (submissions) of readers./li liYou#8217;re not chained to pre-Web notions of definitive-voice journalism (#8221;we know better than you what the news is #8212; there#8217;s no point in discussing it#8221;); you understand you#8217;re no longer in control of the news agenda./li liYou don#8217;t make #8220;quality#8221; a religion and refuse to try new forms of reporting because it doesn#8217;t immediately meet your quality standards. You are willing to try and fail, and keep trying until you get it right, and you don#8217;t resent others doing the same./li /ul pThere are many skills that the modern journalist needs #8212; from being able to write a good story, to where to point the camera, to how to set up a blog, but I#8217;ve interviewed people before who have web skills, but they still didn#8217;t have a growth mindset./p pWe very much need more experienced journalists to expand their skill sets, but if they don#8217;t also work on developing the growth mindset that goes keeping pace in a turbulent media world, then we#8217;re still going to have a hard time succeeding./p
Off the Clock
11 May 2007 at 9:00am
pcenterimg src=http://www.stylusmagazine.com/ipod/070511.jpg/center/p pAs the world’s largest coffeehouse chain, Starbucks is quite the corporate megalith. With over 12,440 world-wide locations currently bringing in about $8 billion in annual sales, the company can often come across like some absurd, caffeine-fueled monster. /p pYet as big as the bean-brewing retailer has ambitiously grown to be, when it has come to the promotional use and sale of music, it has always seemed comfortable with an under-the-radar smallness. Suffering minimal financial risk thanks to its primary source of revenue, Starbucks has had the opportunity to investigate music’s obscure genre alternatives. Whether through its own Hear Music label, producing compilation albums full of unknowns, or through the straightforward sale of artists like the Shins, the Decemberists, and Neko Case, Starbucks has become a prime location for lesser-recognized artists to reach new listeners./p pWith this unique, open door policy in regards to its support of musical talent, it wasn’t long before the coffee giant starting looking inward towards its own employees for untapped up-and-comers. Starbucks recently invited its own staff members to submit original solo or band recordings for an exclusive compilation. Whittling 13 tracks from over 800 submissions, the resulting album, IOff the Clock Vol. 1/I, is a testament to the double-life most musical performers have to lead to make ends meet before they land their break./p pWith songwriters and bands based as far north as Vancouver, and as far south as Orlando, one particular standout track comes from the Atlanta-based group Trances Arc and their song “Ba href=http://www.stylusmagazine.com/ipod/070511-wishes.mp3Champagne Wishes/a/B.” A mid-tempo ballad that was first recorded by the band in 2003—and is featured on their EPs ISave the World/I and IBuona Fortuna/I—the song opens with a slow organ stutter-step. As guitar strums mingle in and out of a southern rock undercurrent, “Champagne Wishes” progresses with a discernable ebb and flow that illustrates the band’s stormy weather/silver lining sound. /p pWhile other songs on IOff the Clock/I range from a speedy jazz saxophone improvisation (Luma), to a swampy Delta blues guitar picking (Racky Thomas), it’s the simple, soft acoustics behind Chicago’s Scatteredtrees and their song “Ba href=http://www.stylusmagazine.com/ipod/070511-sparrow.mp3Sparrow/a/B” that makes the biggest impression. While its subject matter—a comparison between a small bird and the love a woman—has had its share of previous incarnations (i.e. Oasis’s underrated “Songbird”) this delicate lullaby hints at a genuine longing and sadness that it can claim only for itself. As lead singer Nathan Eisland’s sighing vocals reach the point in his chorus in which he pleads to “walk down roads we’ve already walked upon,” the band takes the wrenching feeling of emptiness and turns it into something beautiful. /p pThough some may consider IOff the Clock/I to be just another mellow, coffee-shop compilation, there’s something to be said for a big business willing to understand that there is life outside the typical worker’s nine to five. Most of the people you see waiting behind counters and ringing up cash registers are simply biding their time, making some money to support themselves, waiting to punch out so they can get home and work on what they really love doing. /p p[buy stuff Ba href=http://hearmusic.com/here/a/B]/p
Trulia: Niche Search Done Right [podcast]

Listen
pimg src="http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/trulia-l.png" width="140" height="65" //p pA few days ago, Trulia, the real estate search engine, a href="http://mashable.com/2008/04/09/trulia-google-streetview/"announced their integration with Google Streetview/a to bring a whole new level of detail to property tours online. Currently, listings in 30 US cities are currently offered with a side dish of SteetView, and more material is to be added in real-time as it is captured./p pThis, though, is just a slice of what#8217;s available with Trulia. To be honest, Trulia had escaped my personal radar of Web 2.0#8217;s I keep my eye on. I imagine this has something to do with the fact that I worked in real estate related business for a number of years and burned out on them, combine with the fact that the search sector isn#8217;t my favorite sexy area of web technology./p pDespite this, and given my experience in both areas, I#8217;m keenly aware of how profitable these fields can be if gone about the right way. I got a chance to sit down with Trulia CEO Pete Flint, and they definitely seem to be going about things in the right way, having achieved the level of largest real estate search engine, providing a number of social and search tools to their users./p pThey#8217;re not the type of organization that just slaps in messaging and a couple of vampire vs. zombie applications and call themselves social. They#8217;ve thought out the bits and pieces of real estate utility that should remain social, and those that should remain anonymous, and those that can simply be served by search./p pAdditionally, they#8217;ve got a number of API and webmaster utilities - and by the end of our conversation, I had arrived at the realization that a number of web design firms I knew could be cutting down a lot of their workload by using the Trulia API than trying to work with the hundreds of disparate real estate MLS systems that are in existence out there./p pYou can hear all about this in today#8217;s episode, the embed is available below, or you can a href="http://media.libsyn.com/media/mashable/pete-flint-trulia.mp3"download the MP3 file directly here/a./p pimg src="http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/feed-icon-14x14.png" alt="feed-icon-14×14.png" / a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/MashableConversations"Get the Mashable Conversations podcast here/a.a href="http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=272677784"br / img src="http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/itune-logo-small.jpg" title="itune-logo-small.jpg" alt="itune-logo-small.jpg" align="absmiddle" / Add directly to iTunes here/a (or give us a a href="http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=272677784"rati ng/a).br / a href="zune://subscribe/?Mashable+Conversations=http://feeds.feedburner.com/MashableCo nversations"img src="http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/zune-icon.gif" title="zune-icon.gif" alt="zune-icon.gif" align="absmiddle" width="20" height="20" /Add directly to your Zune here/a./p pcenteriframe src="http://www.google.com/reader/ui/3247397568-audio-player.swf?audioUrl=http://medi a.libsyn.com/media/mashable/pete-flint-trulia.mp3" style="border: 1px solid #aaaaaa; width: 400px; height: 27px" id="musicPlayer"/iframe/center/p pa href="http://sharethis.com/item?wp=2.3.3amp;publisher=f06dc602-68df-478f-8a38-f177716 586cfamp;title=Trulia%3A+Niche+Search+Done+Right+%5Bpodcast%5Damp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fma shable.com%2F2008%2F04%2F15%2Ftrulia-podcast%2F"ShareThis/a/pp---br /Related Articles at Mashable! - The Social Networking Blog:/ppa href="http://mashable.com/2008/04/09/trulia-google-streetview/"Trulia Adds Google StreetView to Home Listings/abr /a href="http://mashable.com/2007/08/01/trulia-findings/"Trulia Releases Useful Data on Real Estate Qamp;A Forum Activity/abr /a href="http://mashable.com/2008/01/09/trulia-publisher-platform/"Trulia Offers Private Label Real Estate Listings to Web Publishers/abr /a href="http://mashable.com/2008/01/15/trulia-passes-zillow/"Trulia Passes Zillow in Online Real Estate Race/abr /a href="http://mashable.com/2008/01/12/online-real-estate-sites-work-to-get-a-listing-s tandard/"Online Real Estate Sites Work To Get A Listing Standard/abr /a href="http://mashable.com/2007/11/07/zune-marketplace-to-accept-podcast-submissions/" Zune Marketplace to Accept Podcast Submissions/abr /a href="http://mashable.com/2007/09/26/yahoo-podcasts/"Yahoo to Close Podcast Directory/a/p
