Wow.  How long has it been since you thought of Nerf Herder, huh?  Yeah, that's what we were thinking too.  Anyways, the kings of "Van Halen" are back (back together too) with their first record in almost 5 years.  Seriously though, these tracks are really good.  Like, really really good.  Almost stuck-in-your-head-all-day-long ridiculously good.  Bravo.  Sure, it's a little werid to have dudes who're pushing 40ish talking about high school reunions, but we suspend our disbelief.  Honest.

IV hits stores on April 29.

  21. New My Robot Friend Video - "Robot High School"
  22. 3 Dec 2007 at 10:44am

My Robot Friend, the stage name for one-robot band Howard Robot, somehow got caught up in the whole electroclash thing in '02 (approximately that month when New York Mag had WIT on the cover), but forget all that. You should check the laptop-laced double-bass blues from MRF's full-length debut Hot Action!...

My Robot Friend - "Why Won't You Call Me Back?" (MP3)

... and then watch this clip for a new cut from Robot's forthcoming album. It's black and white and red-paint water-ballooned all over. That black ball is a star! And possibly held in place with magnets?

Robot High School is out soon on Soma Records.

  23. Hope High
  24. 18 Jun 2007 at 10:07am

The school's Wilton High, and the latest play to emerge from the Theatre class has become a national cause celebre. The school board and the principal banned it after a classmate and her mother complained that it was "biased" on the basis of an early script. Her brother is serving in Iraq, but it was the death of a local boy there that piqued interest in doing the play in the first place. It's a collage of reflections from people serving there, many the same age as the white middle-class kids who are putting on the show.

It's a verbatim script, but you can see that the real charge is that it's culturally "anti war" - which it is. What is does not do, is denigrate any soldiers or veterans. The sad truth is that the administration and Fox News have convinced a lot of people that even talking about real reactions and feelings of combatants here at home, is "unpatriotic". An absurd bit of Orwellian/McCarthyite nonsense. It does undermine the war effort, but only from the perspective of the White House, not the democracy it's supposed to represent. "Voices in Conflict" includes plenty of patriot-speak, and it's a shame that the head and family haven't see it. Anyway, here's my story which aired on Newshour this weekend gone, centred around the one-off performance at the Public Theater downtown: Downloa d high_school_play_ban.mp3

  25. 365 Days #46 - Goddard High School Stage Band (mp3s)
  26. 15 Feb 2007 at 12:30am

    046 MP3:
1 Goddard High School Stage Band - Fire (1:25)
    2 Goddard High School Stage Band - In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (3:03)

Years ago, I privately released a slapped-together, cheesy, homemade CD titled Poly High: School Bands Play the Classics, which was filled with cheesy, homemade recordings of high school bands playing hard rock hits of the 60s and 70s. One of those bands, the Goddard High School Stage Band of Roswell, New Mexico, I had a particular penchant for. I don't know if it was their wall-of-muddy-sound, or their vocalist's strains, but their 1970 LP, The Goddard High School Stage Band Goes Underground, got a lot of plays at my house.

Lo and behold, I later heard from an original member of the band who gave me a copy of their first and better LP from 1969, where they performed under the name "The Wild Ones." These two tracks stem from that piece of genius.

And while you're listening: who among us can step up to the plate and tell the hidden history of the roving recorders involved with those no-name record labels which traveled the country recording high school bands? Labels like Century, Silver Crest, Custom Recording Specialists, American Record Company, Band 'N Vocal Mobile Recording Service, Russ Enloe Custom Records etc., etc. Most likely, their unique history will remain unwritten.

  29. Mp3: Leak Of The Day, Part Two: "High School Musical 2" Is Out For The Summer
  30. 30 May 2007 at 5:07pm

hsm2.jpgThe teenpop juggernaut High School Musical spawned a soundtrack that ruled the album-sales charts last year, and its summer vacation-themed sequel hits the Disney Channel in August. (A movie about summer break that comes out just as kids are picking out their new bookbags? That's sort of mean, no?) POPtastic! has an MP3 of the soundtrack's long-lead first single, which is probably being played on Radio Disney as you read this; it's called "What Time Is It," and if you've ever wondered what a drama-club reimagining of "Ain't No Other Man" might sound like, you may want to take a listen:

  31. Nerf Herder

Today in Music History:In 1993 Elton John’s “Simple Life,” from his 1992 album 'The One,' enters Billboard’s Top Forty. With this charting single, John breaks Elvis Presley’s longstanding record with 24 consecutive years of Top Forty hits.

    Nerf Herder
My good friend Pete over at the Planetary Group is great at keeping me informed about new music which is where I got my first gander at Nerf Herder's forthcoming album IV, which is set to hit stores on April 29. Yes Nerf Herder is a band and they are probably most noted for composing the theme tune to the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and for their 1996 single "Van Halen", a parody tribute to the band of the same name, which attracted significant radio airplay and led to their first major record deal.

Now if you're a major geek nerd such as myself, then you already know where they got their name. If you are unsure I shall enlighten you. The band takes their name from a Star Wars reference — a "nerf herder" is a fictional occupation referred to by Princess Leia in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, when she insults Han Solo for arrogantly asserting that she has romantic feelings for him: "Why you stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf herder!" Apparently a nerf herder is a lower class outdoorsman who spends his days safeguarding the nerfs on various planets across the universe. They can best be compared to the American cowboy or shepherds of old in their steadfast pursuit of an independent lifestyle. They generally wear old, worn out work clothes and carry simple projectile weapons as well as staves they use to drive obstinate nerfs out of their hiding places. Due to their significant skills in fieldcraft and gunplay, as well as not having the resources to bathe and change their clothes often, the rest of the "civilized" universe looks down upon them.

Enough of that though and more about the band. They describe themselves as a "nerd rock" band, and are known for simplistic modern pop punk-style songs with frequently humorous, juvenile and pop-culture-referencing lyrics. Between 1996 and 2002 they had put a few albums under their belt, but after the final tour dates promoting their album American Cheese the band had disintegrated, without announcing an official split in 2003, and a post by on the band's website some time afterwards detailed how most of the former band members had gone on to get "proper jobs". In late 2005, however, Nerf Herder made a surprise comeback, announcing on their website that they were playing a handful of gigs with the original lineup of Parry Gripp (vocals, guitar), Charlie Dennis (bass) and Steve Sherlock (drums). For Parry's May 7, 2007 review of the day, he announced that the original lineup had finally finished recording their 4th album.

This is an album that homercat is heartily recommending. Chock full of pop culture references, witty and humourous lyrics abound and the music is great. For the last week(at least twice a day) I've been playing this album more than anything else in my library and really enjoying it. Not a klunker to be found here folks. A couple of the songs had me laughing out loud and really to sum it all up this album is stuck in my head. Honestly this is my favorite album so far of 2008. Nerf Herder IV is destined to make my top ten list at the end of the year. My advice pre order it now. Why take my word though, here's a couple samples.

    10 Walking in Rhythm (2:45)
    11 Wild Fire (3:41)
    12 Philadelphia Freedom (3:21)
    13 Midnight Blue (3:12)
14 Dance to the Music (2:57)

I like to imagine that all the kids in this choir had huge ear-to-ear grins throughout the entire concert, but then I myself grin pretty hard while listening to this. From what I'm able to gather, Valley High School put on a number of Sound Unlimited concerts throughout the 1970s. There are multiple albums floating around, all with the cover art printed on a separate sheet of paper and pasted onto the sleeve.

Here's another example. The school is still around. I have no idea what their music department is up to these days.
