  3. Episode #58: Harry Potter Potpourri

pThe more interviews J.K. 7. 163 BPM - Body Language
  8. 1 Feb 2007 at 8:00am
I grabbed 20 brand-new tracks and said, Okay, Mister DJ, you can make your set out of these, and you can pick your opening track, but once you start, you're recording and that's it. So I was wingin' it at 163 BPM all the way through -- and ended up with one of Podrunner's most energetic sets (I think, anyhow). Maybe I just proved that all the planning I usually do is a total waste of time. PODRUNNER SHIRTS ARE HERE! Get The Nod from other runners gym in the know when you wear your the Infamous Blue Robot on your new Podrunner T-Shirt or Tank Top! Wrap your New Year's Resolution in a lightweight, comfy, 100% cotton Podrunner shirt or tank, available now at the Sweat Shop on www.djsteveboy.com. 9. A Night at The Ritz Johnny Brenda's
  10. 18 Oct 2007 at 4:00pm
div align="center"img alt="officebeach.jpg" src="http://phillyist.com/attachments/philly_jill/officebeach.jpg" width="640" height="512" vspace="5"//div pA week ago tonight, a href="http://www.reachoffice.net/"OFFICE/a, quite simply, rocked my face off./p pIt had been a long day – the fourth in a row. I left the office at 6:50, giving me just enough time to go home and change clothes before meeting my plus-one for the evening. I just wanted some feel-good music. Fortunately, as I mentioned in a href="http://phillyist.com/2007/10/11/office_space.php"the preview for this show/a, OFFICE iis/i feel-good music./p pI just didn't know how good. You see, I've been let down a lot, lately. I've gone to see a few bands whose CDs I really enjoyed, but whose live performances were... lackluster, to say the least. It's enough to make this music-loving Phillyist a sad, sad girl. But, after a really-pretty-crappy opening act (hipster-frat boys singing goth-inflected emocore – mercifully, I've managed to repress their name), OFFICE took the stage and broke the status quo, launching into "The Ritz" (a href="http://www.newlinerecords.com/media/OFFICE-TheRitz.mp3"MP3/a) with the kind of crazy energy that woke the sleepy crowd at Johnny Brenda's and got them out of their seats and dancing./p pFrom that point on, it was one upbeat indie pop song after another ("Oh My," the video we linked to in the preview, and available as an MP3 a href="http://www.newlinerecords.com/media/OFFICE-OhMy.mp3"here/a, was a special treat), all overseen by Tom Smith, whose duties, according to the band's a href="http://www.myspace.com/officemusic"MySpace page/a, include "lead guitar/ vocals/ letterpress/ ink/ left-hand/ baseball/ lexicon/ mojo/ working follicles/ mediator." Most of his skill set was on display that evening (letterpress was conspicuously absent, as were the working—presumably hair—follicles) to great effect, although the rest of his band (Erica Corniel, drums/ vocals/ DJ/ punctuality/ credit report/ indignation/ single/ covered in green/ repeat story-teller; Scott Masson, rhythm guitar/ piano/ production/ crooner/ nervous breakdowns/ unpredictable disposition/ single/ wigs; Jessica Gonyea, vocals/ percussion/ keyboards/ glockenspiel/ DJ/ raw food consultant/ pills-for-ills/ Gucci-Tone/ organ) all had time to shine, too. (Once their sound levels were set correctly, at least – the harmonies weren't too easy to hear during the first couple of songs.) The set was over almost before it began, and the crowd obviously wanted more. But there was another band on the bill, so OFFICE thanked us and retreated to the area behind the "STAFF ONLY" door./p pWhen I got home from the show, I mentioned to my friend from Chicago that he was right, OFFICE was awesome and I was glad I went, so thanks for the recommendation./p p"I told you so," he replied./p pSo now I'm telling you: next time OFFICE is in town, run, do not walk, to see them. You can thank us later./p pa href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/Phillyist?a=cn7vpi"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~a/Phillyist?i=cn7vpi" border="0"/img/a/pimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/Phillyist/~4/171725493" height="1" width="1"/

  11. Four Eyed Ferries - susej
  12. 30 Apr 2007 at 10:00am
p College was an interesting thing for me. Many highs and many lows. None the less, and no less at the University of Hartford. In the end I was only there for one year. I thought at the time, for the best. The school was pretty divided. There were frat people, normal people and art people. I tended to hang out with the art people in a fog of pot smoke. I still keep in touch with many of these people. And many of them hold a special place in my heart. Perhaps like war buddies. We all went through something. Maybe at different times and places, but we were all there./p pAt my time in Hartford I had a few majors, one girlfriend and one band. I think I was only successful in the later. We were originally called Landon. Based on this one guy we knew who was obsessed (rightly so) with J. Mascis. I still can#8217;t remember how I actually met Landon - he was always just my friend. Gabe wrote all the songs, played guitar and sang. Nick Theodrakis (I love saying his name) originally played bass. Eventually Landon would be the bassist and the band name would change to Four Eyed Ferries due to contractual agreements with our new bassist. Jeff Barksy (now of Insect Factory fame) played live with us. He liked Radiohead before it was utterly too cool for school. I had a lot of respect for his guitar playing. What really attracted me to this band was the few covers we did, conscious or not. We did Sweet Jane from time to time live. And we rocked it./p pWe were only a band for a semester and a half. But we recorded a 45 minute demo on a 4-track in a matter of a few weekends. I also have about 60 minutes of demos. It was a nice arsenal of recordings. All the recordings were hit live to 4-track in the basement (in reality if was a rehearsal ballet studio - with mirrors on all walls and 7 foot ceilings!) of the freshman art dorms. However, we had to walk like a mile to get to this place. I felt like we were in a fallout shelter when we were walking down there. There were many overdubs made, most notably the vocals and subsequent guitars and percussion./p pI have many fond memories of recording, playing and listening to these songs. I thought one of these days Gabe would become a rock star. He#8217;s still a rock star in my head./p pI do recommend starting with track #4 below. And coming back to 1-3 later./p pcentera href="/axs/ax.pl?http://photos.olympus-mons.com/eventus/1995-6/abp.jpg.html" img src="http://photos.olympus-mons.com/d/13131-4/abp.jpg" //a a href="/axs/ax.pl?http://photos.olympus-mons.com/eventus/1995-6/aaz.jpg.html" img src="http://photos.olympus-mons.com/d/13096-4/aaz.jpg" //a/centerHere we go again:Four Eyed Ferriesbr / susejGabe Beeler sang and played guitarbr / Matt played drums amp; percussionbr / Landon Wong just played bassProduced, engineered amp; mixed by Gabe and MattRecorded on a Tascam Porta 03 MKII 4-Track Recorderbr / Recorded in lovely Hartford, CT in Spring 1996 @ RCA Studiosbr / Additional Production amp; Post Production done @ B-Complex, 4th Floor (that was code for Gabe#8217;s dorm room)Mixed at Hartt School of Music in Hartford, CT1. In this song I never really had a feel for the verses and I never felt my drums worked in this song. It#8217;s a rock song, however. Nothing more nothing less. One thing I remember is Gabe liked to use like 6 mics on his tiny guitar cabinet.2. Puzzle Piecebr / a href="/axs/ax.pl?http://www.olympus-mons.com/audio/Four%20Eyed%20Ferries/susej/02%20P uzle%20Piece.mp3" Download audio file (02%20Puzle%20Piece.mp3)/abr /br / [a href="/axs/ax.pl?http://www.olympus-mons.com/audio/Four%20Eyed%20Ferries/susej/02%20P uzle%20Piece.mp3" Download/a]br / Listen to that reverb. That was this seriously gigantor Lexicon reverb. It was probably a $10,000 piece of gear Gabe somehow was able to let us use in a post production studio for a few hours at the Hartt School. This song didn#8217;t really ever do anything for me. You can hear all the Cure we were listening to here. I think Disintegration and Mixed Up and early Dino Jr was our soundtrack. And clearly some Pumpkins. Maybe Nine Inch Nails. I remember Gabe had this box that did electronic music and Gabe had all this NIN sounding stuff. We almost ended up being a band like that. I guess it was just too complicated and rock was a quicker destination.3. Push Too Deepbr / a href="/axs/ax.pl?http://www.olympus-mons.com/audio/Four%20Eyed%20Ferries/susej/03%20P ush%20Too%20Deep.mp3" Download audio file (03%20Push%20Too%20Deep.mp3)/abr /br / [a href="/axs/ax.pl?http://www.olympus-mons.com/audio/Four%20Eyed%20Ferries/susej/03%20P ush%20Too%20Deep.mp3" Download/a]br / I love the end part where Gabe gets funky. This was always a live favorite of mine. I wish that bell of the ride wasn#8217;t so loud. But that#8217;s what you get with a 21#8243; rock ride. What the fuck was I thinking?!/p p4. Song-wise and playing wise. I remember hitting those 16th notes and thinking, #8220;Wow, I#8217;ve never done this [because I ain#8217;t no disco drummer] amp; it doesn#8217;t sound cheesy!#8221; This song would later be reworked in a future other college band. This is definitely one of my favorite Landon basslines. He ripped that shit up more than he ever knew./p p5. Mind Over Matterbr / a href="/axs/ax.pl?http://www.olympus-mons.com/audio/Four%20Eyed%20Ferries/susej/05%20M ind%20Over%20Matter.mp3" Download audio file (05%20Mind%20Over%20Matter.mp3)/abr /br / [a href="/axs/ax.pl?http://www.olympus-mons.com/audio/Four%20Eyed%20Ferries/susej/05%20M ind%20Over%20Matter.mp3" Download/a]br / This song was one I typically skipped, but it feels like it#8217;s the one that simple needed to grow on me. I really don#8217;t remember much about this song. Gabe gets some insane guitar action at the end of this song./p p6. Under My Bedbr / a href="/axs/ax.pl?http://www.olympus-mons.com/audio/Four%20Eyed%20Ferries/susej/06%20U nder%20My%20Bed.mp3" Download audio file (06%20Under%20My%20Bed.mp3)/abr /br / [a href="/axs/ax.pl?http://www.olympus-mons.com/audio/Four%20Eyed%20Ferries/susej/06%20U nder%20My%20Bed.mp3" Download/a]br / If Gabe ever wrote a hit, this was it. I love this song. Hands down. I still do. His playing is great. The bassline is great and it#8217;s a beat I can live with until I die. And check out that mad drum roll in to the first chorus @ 0:46! I do vividly remember recording this track. I think I was late to the session because I was partying and it was way late and I wasn#8217;t hitting the cut, for obvious reasons. But somehow it got to tape. Of course not with out my crazy tempo changes. You can usually tell I was partying that night when I start slowing down. Check out that guitar solo. And I think this song was the first song we decided to hit up percussion. You#8217;ll notice it during the beginning of the guitar solo. I was on shakers and coffee beans and Gabe had some shakers and percussion. I remember recording this on a Sunday afternoon with the sun shining in his dorm. It was a religious experience doing these overdub, at least for me. I learned more about music in those overdub sessions than anywhere else in life./p p7. I totally stole this beat from a Poster Children song called #8220;Where We Live.#8221; Check it. It#8217;s worth it. This was also the first and only song Gabe doubled his vocals to on this record. I wish he did it more, but I guess it didn#8217;t work for his ears. #8220;She used to be my friend#8230;#8221;/p p8. Not sure why, but it was and it rocked. Man, did I really like half time during verses or what?! And Gabe with his chorus effect on the vocals./p p9. I didn#8217;t have my own kit there, so we used whatever was down there. I was on this wild METAL kit. There were two bass drums. I only used one. But I think there were like 7 tom toms. And I tried using them all. I felt like an octopus on this kit. My arms and legs were all sprawled out. You#8217;ll also notice there#8217;s some crazy shit going on with the ride cymbal. In post-production we added a tap-delay. If you listen carefully you can hear the snare delay too as we couldn#8217;t totally isolate the cymbals. I vaguely remember we rushed the recording of this and my drums in the chorus weren#8217;t consistent at all. I was just all over the place. It sticks out like a sore thumb to me, but I doubt anyone would ever notice. I love the distorted guitar Gabe overdubbed over the picked notes. Totally a sleeper song. At 2:09 check out the killer fill. I owe that to the dude who put this massive kit together! Stellar. One other thing: I don#8217;t think it would be possible to record this any hotter. My god the levels must have been through the roof./p p10. Like Don#8217;t Belong, this song was also rushed in it#8217;s recording process. After listening now to it, it#8217;s not so bad or as rushed as I remember. The changes are a little rough, but I think it translates well. Check out the 2nd verse, I simply forgot to come in and hit some downbeats. You can hear the video games in the background. I don#8217;t think Landon knew the chords before that night. Gabe taught it to him on stage, in between songs. Classic. I was playing on a borrowed practice kit with a bunch of cymbals that had been intentionally run over by a car. They were mutilated, but it was such a great night. Jeff Barksy can be heard on these songs. His back was to the audience the whole night. Pure rock amp; roll./p pPS. 15. Interview: Ted Rheingold
  16. 11 Mar 2007 at 5:50pm
h3a href="http://media.libsyn.com/media/carsonsystems/Ted_Rheingold_interview.mp3"Downloa d the MP3/a (10.8 MB)/h3 br/ pThis interview was recorded after the Future of Web Apps in San Francisco, what follows is a full transcript./p pstrongSD: This is Sarah Drew with Vitamin, and I'm sitting here with Ted Rheingold from Dogster and Catster who just gave a wonderful speech on the passion-centric communities and websites that he's seeing as part of the future here. First, just to give a little bit of background you term yourself sometimes as an 'accidental entrepreneur', can you tell us a little bit about that? /strong/p pTR: I didn't expect Dogster to be a self-reliant business. I guess I was a entrepreneur in a way before, because I was making websites for clients, but I really never expected myself to be a CEO. I never saw that in my future, to be running a business and dealing with banking and legal issues. I think though I was very uncomfortable working for other people so maybe it was destined even though I didn't see it clearly at the time./p pstrongSD: What was the 'aha' moment for you with Dogster? /strong /p pTR: There was a day where my girlfriend (my wife now) posted a very brief message on a Craigslist pets area about this new site where people can make web pages for their dogs and there were a hundred new dogs added the next day! (There's never been less that a hundred dogs added from that day, actually) And the Craigslist forums blew up. Within a week later Craig himself had to go on and say, "It's okay, Dogster is a nice community service," but it just created such excitement and emotion on Craigslist that I realised that this was so much bigger than I had imagined./p pstrongSD: What was the emotion that was happening at that time? /strong/p pTR: On Craigslist some people were so annoyed that everyone was talking about nothing but Dogster that they were just like, "Can we just talk about something else?!" But so many people were just so crazy to be able to look at each other's dog photos easily and share them that they refused to stop talking about it and I realised, "Wow, this is big."/p pstrongSD: So, the '…ster', part of how you were using it was as kind of a tag line for the individualised passion-centred site. Is that something that's come to use in the general lexicon? /strong/p pTR: Yeah, well, y'know it already was - mobster, spinster, etc, and so when we were having a really hard time finding a good name, I spoke to the person who owned Dogster and he thought that what I was doing was a great idea and he'd sell it to me for what then was just barely within my budget! I thought, "Well, y'know what, everyone will know what this name means." pstrongSD: Have you become an evangelist for passion-centred sites - do you see that as something that you're going to be doing a lot more of in the future?/strong/p pTR: I think I have. I didn't really plan on it, but what I just look at it every day and whenever I see it I'm really inspired. I love personal creativity and individual approaches to the same problem and every day I see a different approach to the problem of creating community, that is creating community that's dedicated to just one group of people's interests./p pstrongSD: What are some of the key points for really deepening the experience for users as a website creator?/strong/p pTR: Well, people would say to me in the beginning, "Ted, why would I want to use your website when I can just go to the dog park and be with dogs?" And I thought, "You don't want to use my website. You want to go to the dog park." So really this site is for people who can't be where they want to be, but still want to share that passion. So, that's kinda my way of answering you question about allowing people to get deeper with their passions because they're either stuck at work, or they're at their grandmother's and can be with their dog, or they stay up late and no-one understands their love for their Chihuahuas./p pstrongSD: Yeah, is it the 'like mind', it's one of the great things of the net - that you're again able to kind of aggregate and commune with beings.../strong/p pTR: …and people will find each other. They're out there, they don't even know they're looking for each other and when they find something they go, "Ah! How did I not even think I'd want to do this?"/p pstrongSD: Have you taken Dogster to Japan?/strong/p pTR: No. Really, since day one I was like, "Uh, maybe if this gets big I could drop out and be the Dogster Japan guy". I think it would have to be different, it's really harder to have a dog in Japan because of the expenses.../p pstrongSD: Maybe Catster?/strong/p pTR: Yeah. Or Grashopperster. Or maybe Dogster in Japan would be 'adopt a dog from Dogster America' and then that's your avatar on the site for people, but it would need to be... even just the language barrier, it's just so hard to change one web site's language into another. You've got to take everything apart and put it back together. We're still not there./p pstrongSD: Are you thinking about writing a book on passion-centred website creation?/strong/p pTR: As I was preparing this presentation I was thinking, "That's the kind of thing that would turn into a book," and then I thought, "Uh, I don't wanna!" I'm already so maxed out just trying to make great things happen with Dogster and Catster and still enjoying my life that I just don't think I could do a book./p pstrongSD: You probably have most of the outline already down there from your speech./strong/p pTR: That's what the editor always says. I look forward to doing so when I retire!/p pstrongSD: What advice do you have to our listeners in terms of really following your passion and making it into a business and what are some of the... pitfalls is maybe not the right word - but some of the things to watch along the way?/strong/p pTR: Well, Vitamin's great and there's a great community there, so it's a pleasure to get to answer this question. I think one think that's difficult for engineers or designers is that you're often thinking about, "What problems do I have? What problems to I see people on blogs talking about that I could solve?" Before Dogster I made a site called FleetingImage.org, where anyone could upload an interesting image and that was important to me because before Flickr or photosharing I knew that people had really great images on their desktops and I wanted to see them. /p pSo I made this site that made it easy to see them but hard to copy them, so you just had to go there and experience them. And then I thought, when that was done, well, you know what else people like clicking on, they like clicking on pictures of dogs, they like looking at dogs. So, and it was mostly because I saw my wife was going to rescue sites just to look at pictures of dogs and people were showing me on cellphones the pictures of their dogs and cats so I thought I could make this for them. /p pThe interesting image site is still live and I think there may be nine hundred images on it, but doing something that other people wanted which I stumbled into, I'd no idea how many people there were, but I think it's really important to not focus on what geeks or engineers or designers want to do and look for problems that grandmothers or brothers or sisters are having./p pstrongSD: When hearing I was going to be speaking to you a friend of mind said "My cat made number one on Catster". What's that about?!/strong/p pTR: We can make anyone Cat of the Day, and it's just great! Like right now if someone sends an email and says, "Oh, thanks so much for making this site", they can be Cat of the Day. Or if someone's in the forums and there's a little argument going on and someone chimes in and says, "Oh, I don't think you need to be fighting about that, lets look at this cute picture over here," that person is Cat of the Day and then maybe twenty thousand cat lovers are seeing that cat photo and they're giving him cat fish treats, and they're giving him rosettes and it's just, like, I had no idea how wonderful that could be and it's so neat to be able to just dish it out everyday./p pstrongSD: So you have Catster and Dogster, without maybe giving away what might be your next thing, in the mind of Ted Rheingold what are some of your other pet passions?/strong/p pTR: (We like puns!) We'll probably do more pets. It's just so natural for us and it seems so obvious. People say "haven't you done them already?" but we just haven't had the architecture - well, we haven't had the server support, the financial support, or the community support to simply branch out. We could have done them, we could have gotten them live, but we wouldn't have maintained them right, so we really want to make a place for everyone who's a pet lover online because we see passions everywhere and you don't need fifty million people having a passion, you really just need one or two million and so we'd like to branch out into offering more passion-centric services for people who aren't getting them currently./p pstrongSD: In your presentation today you talked a little bit about the advertising, how in-house you were going and soliciting advertising, what sort of advertising model given your user base, given your context, do you find is working? You mentioned sponsorship?/strong/p pTR: Yeah, sponsorship and big advertisers are making everything happen. You know, sponsorship is amazing because any site, no matter how small, could probably find someone who thinks it's worth a certain amount of money to put their logo on every single page. If you have a thousand people coming to your site, but you're writing about yarn types or something, there's probably a yarn maker out there who you can convince to give you a thousand dollars to be a sponsor, or five thousand dollars and the minute you get one, you can go to the next one, and you can say well, that's what this is, now it costs more, now it's fifty thousand, and the sponsor is a whole different mindset, they're looking at it from a strategic commitment, not a tactical ad buy. /p pSo sponsorship is excellent and there are lots of young companies who are looking to get their name out, and if you're an exciting web site that's talking to an exciting crowd for them, it's really reasonable that they could write a check for ten thousand dollars for a year. /p pAdvertising is more difficult, but much more common. We do everything from letting small advertisers auto-upload their ads for a hundred and sixty-five dollars for three months. They get low impressions, relatively, and if they need favors, we're going to have to charge them for the time we spend fixing their ads or something. Then we go all the way up to the PetsMarts or Nintendos, or Targets or Old Navys, who want to do ad buys, they want to be on our homepage, in our newsletter and each one of those gets priced out and that's why you really need the inside ad sales because it's a lot of back and forth, it could take three months to get a deal that may turn into a quarterly deal... so that that's what's made all the difference for us./p pstrongSD: Thanks for giving our listeners that insight. Do you have any other jewels, any other little doggie bones?/strong/p pTR: Adsense or other third party ad schemes never really made any money for us. Affiliate programs never really made money for us. We thought okay, if we put a dog bed on the homepage and it's half price and there's free shipping right now, a lot of people buy it, and we'll get a dollar for every one. Well, we sold two. All week long on the home page, turns out people who are coming to look at dogs aren't really into buying a dog bed./p p Turns out just because you're a dog lover, doesn't mean you want a third dog bed, just because it's half price and free shipping. You probably want to feel it and make sure your dog likes it, so affiliate programs are hard, bounty programs are hard, referral programs are hard… Some people do amazing with them - Plentyoffish made nine hundred and forty thousand dollars in two months on just Adsense ads doing a free dating site, but for the rest of us it's very elusive. We made the mistake of assuming that we'd be making a lot of money just by selling third party ads. Never came close to materializing! /p pstrongSD: Ted, really appreciate your time. I wish all of you that are listening here have the chance to meet Ted, he's a blast and you should check out Dogster and Catster!/strong/p pTR: Thank you very much for having me. If anyone wants to say hello, I'm at ted at dogster.com /p p class="diggit"img src="http://www.digg.com/img/digg-guy-small.gif" alt="digg.com logo" / Like this article? a href="http://digg.com/tech_news/Ted_Rheingold_interview"Digg it/a!/p div class="feedflare"a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/vitaminmasterfeed?a=27UBSxwG"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/vitaminmasterfeed?i=27UBSxwG" border="0"/img/a a href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/vitaminmasterfeed?a=dYgThmGR"img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~f/vitaminmasterfeed?i=dYgThmGR" border="0"/img/a/divimg src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/vitaminmasterfeed/~4/100984432"/

h3a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="http://media.libsyn.com/media/carsonsystems/Ted_Rheingold_interview.mp3"Downloa d the MP3/a (10.8 MB)/h3 pbr//p pThis interview was recorded after the Future of Web Apps in San Francisco, what follows is a full transcript./p pstrongSD: This is Sarah Drew with Vitamin, and I#8217;m sitting here with Ted Rheingold from Dogster and Catster who just gave a wonderful speech on the passion-centric communities and websites that he#8217;s seeing as part of the future here. First, just to give a little bit of background you term yourself sometimes as an #8216;accidental entrepreneur#8217;, can you tell us a little bit about that? /strong/p pTR: I didn#8217;t expect Dogster to be a self-reliant business. I guess I was a entrepreneur in a way before, because I was making websites for clients, but I really never expected myself to be a CEO. I never saw that in my future, to be running a business and dealing with banking and legal issues. I think though I was very uncomfortable working for other people so maybe it was destined even though I didn#8217;t see it clearly at the time./p pstrongSD: What was the #8216;aha#8217; moment for you with Dogster? /strong /p pTR: There was a day where my girlfriend (my wife now) posted a very brief message on a Craigslist pets area about this new site where people can make web pages for their dogs and there were a hundred new dogs added the next day! (There#8217;s never been less that a hundred dogs added from that day, actually) And the Craigslist forums blew up. Within a week later Craig himself had to go on and say, #8220;It#8217;s okay, Dogster is a nice community service,#8221; but it just created such excitement and emotion on Craigslist that I realised that this was so much bigger than I had imagined./p pstrongSD: What was the emotion that was happening at that time? /strong/p pTR: On Craigslist some people were so annoyed that everyone was talking about nothing but Dogster that they were just like, #8220;Can we just talk about something else?!#8221; But so many people were just so crazy to be able to look at each other#8217;s dog photos easily and share them that they refused to stop talking about it and I realised, #8220;Wow, this is big.#8221;/p pstrongSD: So, the #8216;hellip;ster#8217;, part of how you were using it was as kind of a tag line for the individualised passion-centred site. Is that something that#8217;s come to use in the general lexicon? /strong/p pTR: Yeah, well, y#8217;know it already was - mobster, spinster, etc, and so when we were having a really hard time finding a good name, I spoke to the person who owned Dogster and he thought that what I was doing was a great idea and he#8217;d sell it to me for what then was just barely within my budget! I thought, #8220;Well, y#8217;know what, everyone will know what this name means.#8221;/p pstrongSD: Have you become an evangelist for passion-centred sites - do you see that as something that you#8217;re going to be doing a lot more of in the future?/strong/p pTR: I think I have. I didn#8217;t really plan on it, but what I just look at it every day and whenever I see it I#8217;m really inspired. I love personal creativity and individual approaches to the same problem and every day I see a different approach to the problem of creating community, that is creating community that#8217;s dedicated to just one group of people#8217;s interests./p pstrongSD: What are some of the key points for really deepening the experience for users as a website creator?/strong/p pTR: Well, people would say to me in the beginning, #8220;Ted, why would I want to use your website when I can just go to the dog park and be with dogs?#8221; And I thought, #8220;You don#8217;t want to use my website. You want to go to the dog park.#8221; So really this site is for people who can#8217;t be where they want to be, but still want to share that passion. So, that#8217;s kinda my way of answering you question about allowing people to get deeper with their passions because they#8217;re either stuck at work, or they#8217;re at their grandmother#8217;s and can be with their dog, or they stay up late and no-one understands their love for their Chihuahuas./p pstrongSD: Yeah, is it the #8216;like mind#8217;, it#8217;s one of the great things of the net - that you#8217;re again able to kind of aggregate and commune with beingshellip;/strong/p pTR: hellip;and people will find each other. They#8217;re out there, they don#8217;t even know they#8217;re looking for each other and when they find something they go, #8220;Ah! How did I not even think I#8217;d want to do this?#8221;/p pstrongSD: Have you taken Dogster to Japan?/strong/p pTR: No. Really, since day one I was like, #8220;Uh, maybe if this gets big I could drop out and be the Dogster Japan guy#8221;. I think it would have to be different, it#8217;s really harder to have a dog in Japan because of the expenseshellip;/p pstrongSD: Maybe Catster?/strong/p pTR: Yeah. Or Grashopperster. Or maybe Dogster in Japan would be #8216;adopt a dog from Dogster America#8217; and then that#8217;s your avatar on the site for people, but it would need to be hellip; even just the language barrier, it#8217;s just so hard to change one web site#8217;s language into another. You#8217;ve got to take everything apart and put it back together. We#8217;re still not there./p pstrongSD: Are you thinking about writing a book on passion-centred website creation?/strong/p pTR: As I was preparing this presentation I was thinking, #8220;That#8217;s the kind of thing that would turn into a book,#8221; and then I thought, #8220;Uh, I don#8217;t wanna!#8221; I#8217;m already so maxed out just trying to make great things happen with Dogster and Catster and still enjoying my life that I just don#8217;t think I could do a book./p pstrongSD: You probably have most of the outline already down there from your speech./strong/p pTR: That#8217;s what the editor always says. I look forward to doing so when I retire!/p pstrongSD: What advice do you have to our listeners in terms of really following your passion and making it into a business and what are some of the hellip; pitfalls is maybe not the right word - but some of the things to watch along the way?/strong/p pTR: Well, Vitamin#8217;s great and there#8217;s a great community there, so it#8217;s a pleasure to get to answer this question. I think one think that#8217;s difficult for engineers or designers is that you#8217;re often thinking about, #8220;What problems do I have? What problems to I see people on blogs talking about that I could solve?#8221; Before Dogster I made a site called FleetingImage.org, where anyone could upload an interesting image and that was important to me because before Flickr or photosharing I knew that people had really great images on their desktops and I wanted to see them. /p pThe interesting image site is still live and I think there may be nine hundred images on it, but doing something that other people wanted which I stumbled into, I#8217;d no idea how many people there were, but I think it#8217;s really important to not focus on what geeks or engineers or designers want to do and look for problems that grandmothers or brothers or sisters are having./p pstrongSD: When hearing I was going to be speaking to you a friend of mind said #8220;My cat made number one on Catster#8221;. What#8217;s that about?!/strong/p pTR: We can make anyone Cat of the Day, and it#8217;s just great! Like right now if someone sends an email and says, #8220;Oh, thanks so much for making this site#8221;, they can be Cat of the Day. Or if someone#8217;s in the forums and there#8217;s a little argument going on and someone chimes in and says, #8220;Oh, I don#8217;t think you need to be fighting about that, lets look at this cute picture over here,#8221; that person is Cat of the Day and then maybe twenty thousand cat lovers are seeing that cat photo and they#8217;re giving him cat fish treats, and they#8217;re giving him rosettes and it#8217;s just, like, I had no idea how wonderful that could be and it#8217;s so neat to be able to just dish it out everyday./p pstrongSD: So you have Catster and Dogster, without maybe giving away what might be your next thing, in the mind of Ted Rheingold what are some of your other pet passions?/strong/p pTR: (We like puns!) We#8217;ll probably do more pets. It#8217;s just so natural for us and it seems so obvious. People say #8220;haven#8217;t you done them already?#8221; but we just haven#8217;t had the architecture - well, we haven#8217;t had the server support, the financial support, or the community support to simply branch out. We could have done them, we could have gotten them live, but we wouldn#8217;t have maintained them right, so we really want to make a place for everyone who#8217;s a pet lover online because we see passions everywhere and you don#8217;t need fifty million people having a passion, you really just need one or two million and so we#8217;d like to branch out into offering more passion-centric services for people who aren#8217;t getting them currently./p pstrongSD: In your presentation today you talked a little bit about the advertising, how in-house you were going and soliciting advertising, what sort of advertising model given your user base, given your context, do you find is working? You mentioned sponsorship?/strong/p pTR: Yeah, sponsorship and big advertisers are making everything happen. You know, sponsorship is amazing because any site, no matter how small, could probably find someone who thinks it#8217;s worth a certain amount of money to put their logo on every single page. If you have a thousand people coming to your site, but you#8217;re writing about yarn types or something, there#8217;s probably a yarn maker out there who you can convince to give you a thousand dollars to be a sponsor, or five thousand dollars and the minute you get one, you can go to the next one, and you can say well, that#8217;s what this is, now it costs more, now it#8217;s fifty thousand, and the sponsor is a whole different mindset, they#8217;re looking at it from a strategic commitment, not a tactical ad buy. /p pSo sponsorship is excellent and there are lots of young companies who are looking to get their name out, and if you#8217;re an exciting web site that#8217;s talking to an exciting crowd for them, it#8217;s really reasonable that they could write a check for ten thousand dollars for a year. /p pAdvertising is more difficult, but much more common. We do everything from letting small advertisers auto-upload their ads for a hundred and sixty-five dollars for three months. They get low impressions, relatively, and if they need favors, we#8217;re going to have to charge them for the time we spend fixing their ads or something. Then we go all the way up to the PetsMarts or Nintendos, or Targets or Old Navys, who want to do ad buys, they want to be on our homepage, in our newsletter and each one of those gets priced out and that#8217;s why you really need the inside ad sales because it#8217;s a lot of back and forth, it could take three months to get a deal that may turn into a quarterly dealhellip; so that that#8217;s what#8217;s made all the difference for us./p pstrongSD: Thanks for giving our listeners that insight. Do you have any other jewels, any other little doggie bones?/strong/p pTR: Adsense or other third party ad schemes never really made any money for us. Affiliate programs never really made money for us. We thought okay, if we put a dog bed on the homepage and it#8217;s half price and there#8217;s free shipping right now, a lot of people buy it, and we#8217;ll get a dollar for every one. Well, we sold two. All week long on the home page, turns out people who are coming to look at dogs aren#8217;t really into buying a dog bed./p p Turns out just because you#8217;re a dog lover, doesn#8217;t mean you want a third dog bed, just because it#8217;s half price and free shipping. You probably want to feel it and make sure your dog likes it, so affiliate programs are hard, bounty programs are hard, referral programs are hard hellip; Some people do amazing with them - Plentyoffish made nine hundred and forty thousand dollars in two months on just Adsense ads doing a free dating site, but for the rest of us it#8217;s very elusive.
