Description:This English translation of the work of Jean-Louis Serre, originally
published in French in 2002, represents a basic review of molecular techniques
applied to clinical practice in genetics. The author responds well to the past 10
years of technologic advances in the area of molecular genetics and how this
knowledge is used for diagnosis of genetic disorders and other areas such as forensic
medicine. This is not a detailed work, but a basic review for undergraduate and
graduate students taking courses in basic medical genetics and molecular medicine.br

Purpose:The author attempts to make the vast uses of molecular technology
understandable for the beginner. He recognizes that rapid changes have occurred over
the past 10 to 15 years in molecular medicine that have led to the application of
such technology at the clinical level. He indicates in his preface that this is a
basic general presentation of molecular techniques for early students of genetics to
understand the role that molecular medicine plays in the diagnostics of human

Audience:The book is written with the young student in mind and it is a very helpful
as a companion to courses in medical genetics, molecular biology, and molecular
medicine at the graduate and undergraduate level. It would be a great companion in
courses on basic molecular technology for allied health professionals such as nurses,
nurse practitioners, and physician assistants. The author has gathered a great group
of individuals who have demonstrated authority in the field.br /
Features:Of particularinterest is the section on applications of molecular technology
in forensic practices and fingerprinting. The use of historical data and case studies
in forensics is helpful for the basic understanding of the applicability of the
procedures described in the book. The graphics are simple and easy to understand.
This is a difficult task when molecular medicine is usually discussed, but the author
and his group have done a good job of summarizing the information in a simple
manner.br /
Assessment:This is a good, solid, basic review of molecular technology. It is a
useful as a companion book for the beginning scholar in human genetics. Several
English-language publications have responded to the revolution of knowledge in
molecular medicine. It is refreshing to see Dr. Serre's approach to the French
audience as well as the English-language audience.br /

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), published by the
American Psychiatric Association, is the standard classification of mental disorders
used by mental health professionals in the United States and elsewhere. It is
intended to be applicable in a wide array of contexts and used by clinicians and
researchers of many different orientations (e.g., biological, psychodynamic,
cognitive, behavioral, interpersonal, family/systems). It also contains diagnostic
codes (taken from ICD-9-CM) that can be used to satisfy record-keeping and
reimbursement needs. Since all of the diagnostic codes are valid ICD-9-CM codes,
users of the DSM automatically satisfy diagnostic coding requirements under HIPAA.
Please note one recent coding change in DSM-IV-TR (effective October 1, 2004): the
diagnostic code for Narcolepsy has been changed from 347 to 347.00.br /

DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition),
published in 1994, was the last major revision of the DSM. It was the culmination of
a six-year effort that involved over 1000 individuals and numerous professional
organizations. Much of the effort involved conducting a comprehensive review of the
literature to establish a firm empirical basis for making modifications. Numerous
changes were made to the classification (i.e., disorders were added, deleted, and
reorganized), to the diagnostic criteria sets, and to the descriptive text based on a
careful consideration of the available research about the various mental disorders.br

In anticipation of the fact that the next major revision of the DSM (i.e., DSM-V)
will not appear until 2011 or later (i.e., at least 16 years after DSM-IV), a text
revision of the DSM-IV called DSM-IV-TR was published in May 2000. The primary goal
of the DSM-IV-TR was to maintain the currency of the DSM-IV text, which reflected the
empirical literature up to 1992. Thus, most of the major changes in DSM-IV-TR were
confined to the descriptive text. Changes were made to a handful of criteria sets in
order to correct errors identified in DSM-IV. In addition, some of the diagnostic
codes were changed to reflect updates to the ICD-9-CM coding system adopted by the

The next edition of the DSM, DSM-V, is not scheduled for publication until 2011 (or
later). The APA Division of Research manages the DSM revision process and does not
expect to begin forming DSM development workgroups until 2007 or later. More

A. The Micro-Scope diskette contains its own bootable operating system, designed
specifically for diagnostics. Therefore it can be used on any PC, whether the
resident OS on that PC is DOS, Windows, Linux, NetWare, O/S 2 or what have you.br /

Q. All the PCs I work on have Windows, so why should I care about O/S independence?br

A. Windows, like DOS and other popular operating systems, was designed to run the
hardware in the background, so the applications (and the user) are free to focus on
the task at hand and don't need to duplicate the most basic control functions from
one application to the next. This is normally a good thing, but when the application
is a hardware diagnostic, the operating system makes it impossible for the diagnostic
to directly access the various peripherals and motherboard components, leading to
inaccuracy and missing information. With Micro-Scope, the proprietary O/S gives
direct hardware access to the diagnostic routines for the most accurate and complete

A. The first version hit the market in 1991, but has changed continually to keep up
