Matt Bianco is a UK band that was formed in 1983, by the late Kito Poncioni (bass),
Mark Reilly (vocals), and Danny White (keyboards), in 1982, out of the shards of the
abandoned art poppers Blue Rondo A La Turk, for their first album Whose Side Are You
On? they hired then unknown Polish vocalist Basia Trzetrzelewska. Her vocal
arrangements gave the album a jazzy dimension that Reilly and White could not
anticipate, but made good use of. Mixmaster Phil Harding applied what would become
his signature style to the recordings. Hits like Get Out of Your Lazy Bed and Half a
Minute (which Basia would feature live throughout her solo career) turned Matt Bianco
into one of the biggest acts of Europe in 1984. br /

Canadian singer-songwriter Basia Bulat came seemingly out of nowhere to become one of
the most talked about new artists in both Canada and the United Kingdom with the
release of her first full-length album, Oh, My Darling, in 2007. Originally from
Toronto, Bulat lives and writes in the quieter community of London, Ontario, where
she recorded a self-released EP in 2005. Bulat's rich, expressive voice is the ideal
vehicle for her songs, which deal with love and life with a combination of sadness
and wonder, and her melodies are bolstered by a band that incorporates strings and
keyboards along with the traditional drums and guitar. In 2006, producer Howard
Bilerman, best known for his work with the Arcade Fire, took Bulat and her band into
the studio to record her first full-length album; the result, Oh, My Darling, caught
the ear of the esteemed UK label Rough Trade, who signed Bulat and released the disc
in the Spring of 2007 before she had a deal in Canada or the United States. British
reviews for Oh, My Darling were wildly enthusiastic, and a tour of England and Europe
impressed both critics and fans. Canadian independent label Hardwood Records (home to
noted singer-songwriter Hayden) signed Bulat in the summer of 2007.br /

br /
Blame Canada! was the battle cry from a humorous film almost a decade ago. How the
tables have turned since, as the North American province seems to be leading the way
at the minute with some of the most exciting new artists on the planet originating
from its expansive shores.br /
br /
The latest of these, female singer/songwriter Basia Bulat, is a bit of an unknown
quantity outside her homeland. With one self-released EP to her name, Bulat has spent
the last couple of years carefully writing and orchestrating the songs that were to
comprise Oh, My Darling, her first long-playing opus.br /
br /
All that was needed now was a worldwide distribution deal. Enter Rough Trade, and
finally, the fruits of those last two years get to see the light of day.br /
br /
While it would be wrong to put too much emphasis on the production of this record,
the fact that Funeral producer Howard Bilerman got his mitts on Oh, My Darling
probably won't go amiss. Thankfully, though, this doesn't make the finished article
sound like something that's emerged from a one-track production line.br /
br /
If anything, Bilerman should be praised for allowing Bulat and her varied levels of
instrumentation to shine through in their own right, whether on the up-tempo staccato
of 'Snakes And Ladders' or the maudlin sadness of the title track.br /
br /
Indeed, if it's comparisons you're looking for, then Nina Nastasia and Judie Tzuke
probably fit the bill to a degree in that the former's previously grandiose
arrangements seem to have influenced Bulat's own occasional forays into complex areas
of the musical sphere, while the introspective nature of her lyrics almost mirrors
the route favoured by the latter.br /
br /
Not that we're accusing Basia Bulat of plagiarism, you understand - every one has
their own influences after all, and on Oh, My Darling Ms Bulat endearingly comes into
her own, and quite spectacularly in places.br /
br /
An interesting debut then, and further proof that Canada's well of talent hasn't run
dry just yet.br /

her songs are infused with sweet ragtime piano melodies, tender-hearted string
arrangements, and a voice that has been compared to elyse weinberg and leslie feist.
together with her backing band, basia has begun bringing her unique blend of folk and
chamber pop to audiences across canadabr /

This London, Ontario-based singer-songwriter is both a neo-madrigal folkie and a
muted soul whisperer; at its best, her debut album for Rough Trade is an attractive
admixture of aristocratic lilt and snapping rhythm. br /
