Students from the City Academy Bristol, who are refugees or asylum seekers, work hand in hand with a group of elderly people on a joint project to benefit the whole community. The young pupils who may have little or no English, work with the older volunteers in pairs to design and create a mosaic for the Trinity Community Centre, with guidance from artist Victoria Appleton. The activity encourages communication between the two groups to improve the language skills of the students and to bring representatives from old and new communities of Bristol together, helping to break down barriers and build positive relationships.

Google TechTalks January 06, 2006 Illah R. Nourbakhsh Illah R. Nourbakhsh is an Associate Professor of Robotics in The Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. He was on leave for the 2004 calendar year and was at NASA/Ames Research Center serving as Robotics Group lead. He received his Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University in 1996. He is co-founder of the Toy Robots Initiative at The Robotics Institute. His current research projects include educational and social robotics, electric wheelchair sensing devices, believable robot personality, visual navigation and robot locomotion. His past research has included protein structure prediction under the GENOME project, software reuse, interleaving planning and execution and planning and scheduling algorithms. At the Jet Propulsion Laboratory he was a member of the New Millenium Rapid Prototyping Team for the design of autonomous spacecraft. He is a founder and chief scientist of Blue Pumpkin Software, Inc., which was recently acquired by Witness Systems, Inc. Illah recently co-authored the MIT Press textbook, Introduction to Autonomous Mobile Robots. ABSTRACT In this talk, I will describe two major community-building projects at the Toy Robots Initiative at Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute.

Google Tech Talks November, 13 2007 Suppose you have a passion for items of a certain type, and you wish to start a recommender system around those items. You want a system like Amazon or Epinions, but for cookie recipes, local theater, or microbrew beer. How can you set up your recommender system without assembling complicated algorithms, large software infrastructure, a large community of contributors, or even a full catalog of items? WikiLens is open source software that enables anyone, anywhere to start a community-maintained recommender around any type of item. We introduce five principles for community-maintained recommenders that address the two key issues: (1) community contribution of items and associated information; and (2) finding items of interest. Since all recommender communities start small, we look at feasibility and utility in the small world, one with few users, few items, few ratings. We describe the features of WikiLens, which are based on our principles, and give lessons learned from two years of experience running wikilens.org. From 2003 to 2006 he was a research fellow with the GroupLens research group at the Unviersity of Minnesota, which is most well-known for recommenders, but now studies online community more broadly. Being located in a run down area, Skerton Community High School in Lancaster has been through troubled times but has now been transformed for the better by embracing the National Healthy Schools Programme. New initiatives have been integral to turning the school's fortunes around, while helping to bring about improved teacher-pupil relations. The school also has a thriving nurture group to assist those pupils with behavioural and emotional issues. Amongst the healthy eating initiatives, there is a cook and eat scheme involving students making meals, which they then take home. The school has already staged a number of bike to school days, and they now plan to become the first school in England to provide free bikes for all their students, with the help of grants.

They told the team about living conditions in their area. According to some estimates, nearly 50,000 Muslims live in Kosovo-Metohija, in Sredacka Zupa, near Pec, Vitomirica and Kosovska Mitrovica. There is also a small number of Muslims in Pristina.

As he believes that a community school should be the hub of the community it serves, the school has an open door policy. This means that he and his staff are accessible to anyone at any time. And Paul's commitment to the 100 per cent ethnic composition of the school is such that all the staff are multi-lingual and multi-skilled. This programme shows how the open door policy extends teaching beyond the classroom and into the community. As a Muslim himself, Paul's Friday lunchtimes are spent at the local mosque where he translates the sermon into English for members of the congregation who may not speak Urdu. The school buzzes with parents every day. They may be arriving for English classes or flower arranging or just popping in for a chat. So far, these are the names of very prominent investment advisers who have announced their support for Ron Paul: Axel Merk (Merk Hard Currency Fund), Harry Schultz (Harry Schultz Letter), Jim Rogers, (Jim Rogers.com), Richard Russell (Dow Theory Letters), and Peter Schiff (Euro Pacific Capital). Not to mention the Chicago pit traders who were cheering for Ron Paul when he went head to head with Bernanke! Also, I was down at a local silver / gold shop in Boston the other day and I handed the guy behind the counter a bill stamped with Ron Paul 2008 on it. The issue had a two page report on libertarian, Dr. Ron Paul, the Texas Congressman, who is running for President. Ron believes in the US Constitution. Ron would like to shut down the Federal Reserve and go back to the gold standard. I gather Ron would end the war in Iraq -- further, he would close down all our 120 military bases that are spread across the face of the globe. Ron would legalize narcotics and thereby end our expensive and idiotic "war on drugs."
